James Michael Goins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 9, 2005.
At a muscular 230 pounds with a fondness for tall Stetson hats, there was no ignoring Mike Goins, nicknamed "Big Country" by his fellow soldiers. "He was a big boy," said Capt. Kevin Badger. "When he walked into the room, you knew it." Goins, 23, of Bonner Springs, Kan., was killed Aug. 15 when a militia member scaled the back of his tank and shot through the open hatch. Despite his imposing demeanor, Goins had a soft side _ he was learning Arabic so he could chat with children he met in Iraq, and he left a standing order with a florist back home to send flowers to his wife, Paula, each month and on special occasions. "He was that kind of husband," said his mother, Tammy. Athletic and well-liked, Goins was valedictorian of his high school class and captain of the basketball team. He graduated with honors from Kansas State University, where he was an Army ROTC cadet. He was later based at Fort Hood, Texas. "He was just admired and liked by everybody that knew him," said his father, Jim Goins.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of James Michael Goins US Army 2nd Lieutenant.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

Mike was an ROTC classmate of mine at Kansas State. He was and always will be remembered by me as a great man. It wasn't hard to see the greatness in him that inspired others. I'm thankful to his family that raised him to be the selfless servant he was and will be forever grateful for his and their sacrifice.

To The Goins Family, Mike was a great big brother, plus the best leader I ever had the privilege and honor of serving with as an enlisted leader in his unit. In the nearly 12 year's since his passage unto fiddler's green, I still miss him dearly, but will never forget the presence of his strength and everlasting being.

To the Goins family: I was in an infantry company assigned to Lt. Goins' tank company. We worked alongside each other during most our tour. I miss this man everyday and have the utmost respect for him.I remember him asking me about boats because he wanted to get one when we got back to have fun with his wife. Just all around great man, my heart still goes out to y'all. He really impacted my life with his wonderful personality. One of the greatest leaders ever. Just know he will never be forgotten and I remind people here daily of his sacrifice. We are truly blessed to have known Mike.

Five years later, and I still think about Big Country every day. I will never forget Mike. His legacy is branded into hunreds of leaders across the Army that were in the cemetery on that tragic day. His brothers in A/2-12 CAV, Maddogs, will never forget him.

To the family, my prayers continue to be with you.

I was there wiith Mike on that awful day in An Najaf. He was a good man, excellent leader and good friend. I will remember him always as an American Hero whom gave his last full measure of devotion to his God, country and his men. Mike the line still holds, rest easy in the arms of God.
May God watch over your loved ones, and angles surround them. Gods speed Big Country, see you on the high ground brother.

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of 2nd Lt Goins. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that 2nd Lt Goins knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you 2nd Lt Goins.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know James, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Your picture reminded me how valuable everyday really is. They should not be taken for granted.

My wish is that things could be different. Some things can not be undone.

Godspeed.

I worked with Michael's wife Paula at First Bank in Manhattan Kansas. I met Micheal on many occasions when he would pick Paula up for lunch. He was one hell of a good man and will be truly missed. R.I.P. Mike and God Bless Paula and the rest of the Goins family.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I will miss James. I will miss his laughter, his smile and his charm. I was with James at NALC Ft. Lewis, WA 2002. I enjoyed his company and friendship, I have missed it since his passing. James was a special guy...he was honest, caring and truly respected by his peers. One of things I remember most about him was his commitment to family. He talked about his wife and home constantly. I will continue to miss him, and I will never forget him. God rest his soul and bless his family.

I live in Bonner Springs and was unaware until now that we had lost any of our Bonner boys. I am so sorry for your loss. He sounded like such a great man. Valedictorian is such a major accomplishment. So sweet of him for the standing arrangement with the florist. So sorry.
