Darby inspired many people to be a better person and always to remember to welcome the newcomers to our midst. He will be missed in our meetings and on the dance floor!

Darby was an inspiring man w/ a joie de vivre like no other. He had an uncanny ability to put a smile on the face of a chess player even after they went through the most brutal loss. Darby had a self deprecating humor and had an unselfish way about him such that he always put the group before himself. Darby made me want to be a better person. He was a great man.

I am sorry for your loss:
Shannon & Jerry, extended family & loved ones, I am so awfully sorry to hear about Darby's passing. He was indeed some kind of something special and I have no doubt the Lord has procured a very special place in Heaven for him. If I know Darby and his silly jokes he is probably looking down on all of us with his reassuring smile and telling us not to worry about him. "BE HAPPY" I have nothing but fond memories of him and sharing chocolate chip mint ice cream with him as a child. It remains my most favorite to this day. Take your good memories and treasure them always and know that you are uppermost in my thoughts and prayers. I love you ALL, Aunt Susan

He took me in as a child, became my chocolate chip mint ice cream buddy, rescued me from the very bitter depths of hell and truly showed me how to smile. I am honored to call him my other BIG brother, confidant and Hero. The world and every single "bean" you touched will TRULY and SADLY miss you.

Let us ALL be ok when our Hero's become Angel's and forever wrap ourselves in the warmth of their smile.

Darb,

You were a kind, gentle, loving spirit with an endless smile. You've always held a special place in my heart since I met you 40 years ago. The world is a better place for having held you in her arms albeit slightly dimmer with your passing. My sympathies to Shannon, Jeremy and all who have lost you.

I will miss you Darby. I don't get a chance to say that very often. Your strength, honesy and the will to do what is right was your strength that you passed on to every one who met you. My heart goes out to the family for the loss and to his AA family for their loss.

He always had a hug and a smile and a joy in life that was contagious. He was a chess player, a dancer, and a friend. I understand that he died at a dance, hanging out with old and new friends ,with little notice and no time to say good-bye. We will miss you Darby

I was looking forward to seeing Darby again after several years. He had signed up to play in the chess tournament in Portland in mid August. I have known Darby from the time we both lived in the Yakima WA area. He was in the group that played a chess match at the Walla Walla prison many years ago. Also think he was in the car coming back from a chess event in Seattle to Yakima when I ran out of gas just short of Yakima.
RIP Darby

Though I had less than one year to know Darby, it was like a lifetime. I never saw him frown, say a cross word or get down in the dumps. That positive attitude influenced many and I am most grateful for the chance to know Darby. You will be missed. Wade Rumney, Arlington, Wa

Dear Jeremy, Luce, and family,
Darby was one of my dearest friends. I loved him so much and I will miss him. I just keep thinking about all the things he taught me. He told me God loves me all the time and to smile. He had a great smile and was so very loving, giving, selfless, and fun. He loved his family and was a shining example of the "family man". I want you all to know if there is anything I can do in this time of sorrow just call me anytime. His legacy lives on in all of you and he was so proud of you all.
"May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields,
and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand."
