It's been many years since I saw Raul but his passing brought back many warm memories. I see him standing in his Army uniform when he first came home from boot camp. He was so proud and we were all so proud of him.
A group of us were very close to his younger brother Rickey. We helped Rickey build and decorate a Nam-style party "hootch" in the backyard in Raul's honor. Raul got a big kick out it and so did we.
Raul was the big brother we all admired. He was a cool, leveled-headed dude who offered wise and often humorous counsel about our wild teenage ways. I remember many good times and much laughter in the Velazquez home.
Rest in peace, my friend. My condolences to the Velazquez family.
