SHELBY: Haven Hummel, age 89, resident of Shelby died Tuesday March 6, 2012 in MedCentral/Mansfield Hospital.

Born December 10, 1922 in Crawford County near Tiro to Carroll and Bessie (Brubaker) Hummel, he had been a Shelby resident the majority of his life. A 1940 graduate of Shelby High School, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII in the European Theater. Haven was a dedicated, lifelong farmer who was still actively operating his farms up until early January of this year. He was a member of the Ontario Christian Church and the Good Sam Camping Club for many years.

Survivors include three sons, Daryl (Terri ) Hummel of Troy, Ohio, Douglas (Cindy) Hummel of Ontario and Gregory (Stephanie) Hummel of Shelby; three daughters, Sue Donahue of Shelby, Connie (Otto) Swogger of Ontario and Sheila Hummel of Ontario; 22 grandchildren, one step-grandson; 20 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; very special friend, Inez Armstrong of Shelby; his brother-in-law Darwin (Lou Ellen) Sampsel of Shelby; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by wife, Beverly Sampsel Hummel, in 1988, one son, Haven Eric Hummel in 2004, one son-in-law, Larry Donahue in 2003 and two brothers, Reed and James Hummel.

Funeral services will be held 10:00AM Saturday March 10, 2012 at the Ontario Christian Church. His minister, Randy Allen, will officiate with interment in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorial expressions may be made to Ontario Christian Church.
