JUANITA SINGLEY Obituary

Juanita Shelton "Nita" Singley, 88, a resident of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away Friday, March 8, 2013, in Montgomery. Visitation will be held at Leak Memory Chapel at 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2013. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in Greenwood Cemetery with Chaplain Lenny Bolton officiating. Norma Juanita Shelton was born in Montgomery on August 2, 1924, to Zuela Freeman Shelton, Sr. and Honorah Hale Shelton. Nita attended Montgomery schools and at the age of 17 married the love of her life, Clifford E. Singley, three weeks after the Pearl Harbor invasion. World War II, the occupation of Japan, and the Korean Conflict dominated their lives until Cliff separated from the United States Air Force in 1953 to return to Montgomery and join the 160th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron as an aircraft pilot in the Alabama Air National Guard. Nita served faithfully in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Alabama National Guard for many decades. Her working career was spent primarily with the State of Alabama Dept. of Revenue, retiring in 1980 as a Revenue Examiner. After retirement, Nita and Cliff enjoyed living at the home they had built with their sons at Lake Martin, Auburn football, and most of all "Nia" enjoyed being a large part of her grandchildren's lives. A lifelong Methodist, Mrs. Singley was a member of Aldersgate UMC.

Mrs. Singley was predeceased by her parents; husband of 47 years C.E Singley, Col. USAF (RET.); son Clifford Shelton Singley; and sisters Helen Shelton Renz and Emily Lane Murphy. She is survived by sons John Charles "Chuck" Singley (Pam) of Montgomery and David Nelson Singley (Hanna) of Woodbridge, VA; brother Zuela Freeman Shelton, Jr., of Hope Hull, AL; sister-in-law Evelyn Singley Perry of Montgomery; grandchildren Lisa Singley McDaniel (Curtis), Michelle Singley Longcrier (Hal), Clifford Grant Singley, Curtis Lee Singley, and Janis Lee Singley; great grandchildren Riley, Kennedy, Nia Kate, Drew, Chloe, and Stone; nieces and nephews.

Please make any memorial contributions to Aldersgate UMC, 6610 Vaughn Rd., Montgomery, AL 36116.The family extends a heartfelt thanks to Susan Durden and her wonderful staff of caregivers at Angels for the Elderly in Montgomery for their tender and loving care.

Nita Singley was a gracious, kind, gentle and generous lady who thought only of others. A wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, her infectious optimism inspired all who knew her. She will be greatly missed.
