MARGARET MCCALL Obituary

MCCALL, Margaret Thorington Kohn (Nootsie), a resident of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away on December 18, 2012. A sixth-generation Montgomery resident, Mrs. McCall was a direct descendant of General John Scott, one of the city's co-founders. A graduate of Margaret Booth School, Sidney Lanier High School and Hollins College, Mrs. McCall was a former president of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in Alabama, a member of the Board of Regents for Gunston Hall, the colonial home of George Mason in Virginia, and a former board member for many charities and historical organizations. Mrs. McCall lived with her late husband, Dr. Doy Leale McCall, Jr., in Selma for over 30 years before moving back to Montgomery after his death. She was an active member of both the Church of the Ascension and St. John's Episcopal Church in Montgomery, as well as St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Selma.

Besides her husband, Mrs. McCall was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Thorington Kohn and John Peter Kohn, and her beloved nurse, Susie Rebecca Harris. She is survived by her three children, Doy Leale McCall, III, of Montgomery, Margaret Thorington McCall Rolfsen and son-in-law Rob of Raleigh, North Carolina, and John Peter Crook McCall and daughter-in-law Abby, of Mobile, five grandchildren, Robert Joseph Rolfsen, III, John Peter Crook McCall, Jr., Mary Douglas McCall, Margaret Thorington Rolfsen, and Margaret Tollison McCall, and a dear friend, William Stancik.

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Montgomery at 11:00 am on Friday, December 21, 2012, with a private burial for family members preceding the service. Honorary Pallbearers are John Randolph Conover, Jr., Jack Thorington Conover, Simon Sutton Flythe, III, Francis Hill Kohn, Francis Hill Kohn, Jr., William Gilbert Kohn, James Lahey McGowin, William Claude McGowin, Jack Thorington and James Taylor Upchurch, III.

Mrs. McCall's family would like to thank the many wonderful caregivers who assisted her during her recent illness, especially Rachel Webster.

Mrs. McCall requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St John's Episcopal Church in Montgomery (113 Madison Avenue, Montgomery, Alabama, 36104), Gunston Hall (10709 Gunston Road, Mason Neck, Virginia, 22079), Hospice of Montgomery (1111 Holloway Park, Montgomery, Alabama, 36117), or to the charity of one's choice.
