REMEMBERING BILLY GRAYDON JR
[feb 22, 1932 - aug 8, 2013]
w.h. "billy" graydon jr is my picture
of a jolly good old fellow
he liked to eat like i do
and every time i saw him
we drove around for chris' hotdogs
in downtown montgomery
he loved to cook breakfast for everyone
for martha and arnold, for bricy and randy
he'd even put eggs on my plate
pour orange juice in my glass
and at cocktail hour, i'd sometimes pour him
his drink of old forester bourbon whiskey
he always played skip-bo against me
always teamed up with arnold, his other brother-in-law
so i often played with his wife bricy
or his sister martha, or his brother randy
but billy and i both sat around for american idol
we didn't talk often on the phone
i think he had trouble hearing
and i know i have a foreign accent
thick as my regret of not attending his big 80 bash
our exchanges were limited: how are you?
i'm fine, and you? how's bricy?
we could hardly hear each other
but we always ended saying i love you,
i love you, too!
so i didn't talk to him three months
before he passed away, but i remember very well
our last words to each other: i love you,
i love you, too!
old man billy, i miss you
i miss tying your shoe laces when i could
i miss you teasing me with leftover eggs:
starving children in the philippines!
but most of all, i miss
that one time we potted a climbing plant together
you said i did a good job; i knew
and i also knew it meant more than just the plant
because you also said the last time i left alabama,
thank you for taking care of my baby brother
you said i did a good job; i know.
so maybe this poem is a sorry excuse
for not attending your funeral, billy old fellow
but i also just want to remember you as you were:
my jolly good old man billy, brother-in-law
and brother in the climbing plant potting conspiracy.
i can almost hear us: i love you
i love you, too!
