1st grade: 1961! I'd slipped off my chair and bloodied my lip and here came my hero! Mr. Stevenson, who just happened to be passing the classroom, ran into the room, whisked me off the floor and down to the nurse! Thanks!

In honor of Coach Stevenson I am tucking in my shirt tail and doing 10 push ups right now. I don't remember all of my teachers. I remember the ones that made a difference.

Mr. Stevenson was my gym teacher at Northside School in the 60's and without a doubt my favorite teacher forever. I have passed along his famous backwards basketball shot to my daughter and all her friends who think it's the coolest. On the field he would yell,"hey hot dog" and that would be enough to propel you to give 110 percent and usually wind up winning. Thanks for everything Mr. Stevenson, we will never forget you

I was a very fortunate person during my first two years of college, as Coach Stevenson was my coach for Soccer, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track, as well as my professor for several classes at Nassau Community College. He was a mentor that will never be equaled, and if all of us can conduct ourselves a little like Coach Stevenson we would all be a better person. My condolences to Mrs. Stevenson and the boys. Your dad made a major impact on my life, and many others. I am glad I had the opportunity to tell him so a few years ago.

My Uncle Bill always had a smile and a hello when you saw him. He showed genuine interest in you personally. As a kid I remember he always made me feel important. Teenie Bopper he called me. Reading all these kind entries shows just how many other peoples lives he touched. He will be missed. We will keep you in our prayers Aunt Alma, Bill, Guy and Matthew. In my mind, Mr. Stevenson will always be the lithe, muscular athlete whose bi-ceps never fit into his gray T shirt. He was my wrestling coach at Wheatley who was teacher/mentor/coach as he stood on the mat, whistle around his neck, quietly teaching, teasing and urging us to do more- to push harder. He led by example and none of us dared challenge him in the wrestling room where testosterone ran rampant. Occasionally, when one of us got out of line we were painfully (albeit playfully) straightened out.
In my 17 years of competition and 15 years of coaching wrestling at the college level, Mr. Stevenson was the finest wrestling coach I've ever seen. In a sport where it is easy to abuse young athletes by pushing them too hard, Mr. Stevenson struck just the right balance and knew where the line was with each wrestler.
He will always be that lean, muscular man who made me want to push harder, to accomplish more than I thought I could-and, in so doing he taught me that I could do so much better in many different areas.
He had a lasting influence on me and many others. I hope his family is comforted in knowing how many lives he improved along the way.

Hard to believe Bill Stevenson coached our Wheatley wrestling team a half century ago, but his spirit and influence have lived with me ever since. He seemed so joyful, strong and ageless when last met at the 50th school reunion that I can't believe he's gone. Peace to you and your family, Coach, you certainly gave us grapplers a great example of how to compete and enjoy life.

Bill Stevenson was not just my gym teacher at The North Side School and wrestling coach at The Wheatley School, exalted enough a place in my life though that was, but my childhood hero.............along with Mickey Mantle, whom I was convinced, based on appearance and physical prowess, was the same person. He was a great guy, and I'm sad.
