JAMES PEDOWITZ Obituary

PEDOWITZ--James M., 96, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2012 at his East Williston home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was educated at New York University where he graduated from the Law School in 1938. He served in the Army in WWII. Shortly before the Normandy invasion, he met his loving and devoted wife Mary. They were married in London on July 22, 1945. When the War ended he was a Major, and remained in the Reserves for 25 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He served as Chief Counsel of the Title Guarantee Company, was a Partner at Marshall, Bratter, Greene, Allison & Tucker and later served as Special Counsel at Rosenman & Colin. In his 72nd year he was asked to teach real estate law courses on a full time basis as a Visiting Professor at St. John's University Law School, where he taught until he was 78. He then joined Berkman, Henock, Peterson & Peddy, where his nephew Steven Peddy was a named Partner, and continued to practice until his recent illness in November. He served as President of the Nassau County Bar Association, and was an Officer and served as Chairman of the Real Property Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. He received numerous professional awards-most notably, the Real Property Section's first Award for Professionalism in 2001. He is survived by his wife Mary and his three children and their spouses: Larry Pedowitz and his wife Kathleen; Dinah Einhorn and her husband Robert; and David Pedowitz and his wife Faith, as well as eight grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. He is also survived by his brother Leonard Peddy and his wife Corinne and his sister Blossom Finkelstein, as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at I.J. My sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Pedowitz.

To me Jim Pedowitz will always be as he was when he was my adjunct real estate professor at NYU Law School. I think he was one of the few adjunct professors who told few stories to impress the students about their professor's personal experiences as a lawyer. Instead, Pedowitz stuck to the nuts and bolts which he new so well. I kept the handouts from his course for decades. I think his presentation of the course was one of the reasons I ultimately decided to try my hand as a real estate lawyer so many years ago.

Jim was a please to deal with - a perfect gentleman and a depth of knowledge that was unsurpassed. He was a personal friend of my dad who was a real estate lawyer and professional and dad introduced me to Jim when I joined his business. Even after my dad's passing Jim always prioritized responses to my real estate title problems. I considered Jim one of Long Islands National Treasures and want to send my personal condolences to his family who should be proud to have been a relative of such a great human being as Jim was.
