STEVEN KRANE Obituary

KRANE--Steven C. The lawyers and staff of Proskauer Rose LLP mourn the sudden and untimely passing of our longtime partner, colleague, and friend, Steven C. Krane. Steve was one of the nation's foremost and widely recognized leaders in the field of legal ethics and professional responsibility. He was also a wise counselor and confidant, a dear friend, charming colleague and a truly kind and decent human being. The General Counsel of Proskauer, Steve also served as co-head of the firm's Law Firm Practice Group, where he represented law firms and individual lawyers in their most sensitive and important matters. But he will likely be best remembered for his integral leadership role in developing and interpreting the rules governing the professional conduct of lawyers. Steve was a member of the New York State Commission on Public Integrity and the former Chair of the American Bar Association's Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility. For 14 years, Steve also led the New York State Bar Association committee responsible for formulating the ethics rules governing New York lawyers. In 2007, he was appointed by then-Chief Judge Judith Kaye as co-chair of the New York Judicial Institute on Professionalism in the Law. He also served as vice-chair of the NYSBA Special Committee on the Law Governing Firm Structure and Operation (the MacCrate Committee); chaired the NYSBA Special Committee on Multidisciplinary Practice; and was recently named vice-chair of the International Bar Association Committee on Multidisciplinary Practices. Steve was active in the development of law and policy relating to cross-border legal practice, serving as one of the principal negotiators for the ABA and NYSBA in their efforts to achieve agreements with foreign governments to liberalize restrictions on lawyers. He held numerous positions in this arena, including: chair-elect of the NYSBA Section on International Law and Practice; chair of the NYSBA Special Committee on Cross-Border Legal Practice; and advisor to the ABA Task Force on International Trade in Legal Services. He was recently appointed to the Policy Committee of the Bar Issues Commission of the International Bar Association. Steve also had a distinguished career as a bar leader outside of the field of legal ethics, most notably serving as president of the NYSBA in 2001-2002, the youngest person to hold that post, and as a member of the ABA's Board of Governors. He coordinated the efforts of the organized bar in responding to the terrorist attacks of September 11; successfully represented the ABA in its challenge to the Federal Trade Commission's "Red Flag Rules"; and created and chaired the Student Loan Assistance for the Public Interest program, which provides grants to lawyers in public interest jobs. Active in the community, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Friends of the John Jay Homestead (Katonah, NY). He previously served as a clerk for Judge Kaye, with whom he maintained a longtime friendship, in the New York State Court of Appeals. In addition, he was a hearing panel member and the hearing panel chair of the Departmental Disciplinary Committee, First Judicial Department, in New York; served as a hearing panel chair for the Committee on Grievances of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York; and was a special referee for disciplinary cases in the Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department. Steve also wrote and lectured extensively on ethics issues, and taught professional responsibility for several years at the Columbia University School of Law. Apart from his extraordinary professional accomplishments, Steve was a remarkable human being: beloved by colleagues; a devoted mentor to numerous young lawyers; brilliant but humble; passionate about the profession; a man of boundless energy, impeccable integrity and filled with abundant cheer. He will be sorely missed and always remembered as a true lawyer's lawyer and a devoted colleague. Our thoughts are with his family. Allen I. Fagin Chairman, Proskauer Rose LLP

My deepest sympathies to Steve's family. I met him with his family at several yearly NYSBA meetings abroad and still remember him for his thoughtfulness and sense of humor. His many accomplishments are an example to follow for many other professionals. He will be missed by many colleagues worldwide who had the privilege of meeting him.

To Steve's family and friends,
I served on the American Bar Association's Board of Governors with Steve, and, in fact, we are in the same "class" -- the class of 2012. I actually was assigned to sit next to him at all of the Board of Governors meetings. I was always struck by Steve's thoughtfulness and humility. Steve was the type of person who did not speak at meetings to hear himself talk; rather, he spoke up when he had something substantive to contribute. Accordingly, everyone paid attention when Steve spoke. He was an incredibly dedicated and humble colleague and will be sorely missed.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Steve was a brilliant colleague on the ABA Ethics Committee. From time to time after I left the Committee, I chatted with him about legal ethics developments, and he always was generous with his time and well-informed. My thoughts are with you.

To the family of Steve Krane,

Given how greatly multitudes who knew Steve in a more public sense, of whom I am but one, will miss him, I can only begin to imagine the extent of your loss. Even though he was in a different department while I was at Proskauer, I interacted with him a fair amount, including when he represented the Firm and me before the City's Conflict Interest Board when we were determining whether it made sense for me to accept an appointment to the City's Commission on Human Rights. Back then, and through subsequent bar-association interactions, I deeply admired his eloquence, intelligence, dry humor, calm, devotion to public interests, and strong sense of what is right. He clearly made a positive impact on many and will certainly not be forgotten. Please accept my heartfelt condolences on his untimely passing.

One consolation that we have during this difficult period of mourning is that Steve left lights flaming bright in many different places, and we will all be guided and encouraged by the beacons he left along the way.

To The Family of Attorney Steven C. Krane:

My deepest sympathy for the grief you are currently experiencing; may the love and support of family and friends ease the transition.

According to Oscar Wilde, "life is terribly deficient in form--its catastrophes happen in the wrong way to the wrong people." Yet, if one can find "the light" in recent events it is that Steve left a legacy of integrity!

As a colleague of Steve, and not a personal friend, he definitely "walked his talk" regarding attorney conduct. Steve literally connected with people from all over the world, many of whom are members of the New York State Bar Association ("Association"). Thus, I symbolically light a candle with the knowledge that the God who watches over all of us will give you strength and comfort in the coming days.

In Sympathy,
Claudia Torrey

It's so hard to comprehend this enormous and untimely loss, for our profession, our Association and all of us who knew and loved Steve as a friend and counselor. Anyone who can make COSAC revisions the funniest part of a House of Delegates meeting is guaranteed eternal life. Naming the Student Loan Assistance for the Public Interest fund of the Bar Foundation in his memory is a great tribute - smoothing the hard road for the next generation of public servants such as lawyers for the poor, the disabled, and others in need. I hope many will honor and cherish Steve's memory in this way.

Steve was the epitome of what a lawyer should be: smart, articulate, thorough, thoughtful, concerned about the profession and the clients it serves, unfailingly courteous and a pleasure to be around. He mentored or was a friend to many, and he will be sorely missed.

My deepest sympathy to his family. Steve was a person whose talents were immediately obvious. My memories of him, his knowledge and kindness, will remain in my heart; Virgil said it first and best about another fallen leader: "sunt lacrimae rerum et mentem mortalia tangunt"; sorrow is implicit in the affairs of men.
