Emma Bates Memoriam

Emma Bates, a tireless community activist who fought the Rybovich boat company plan to lease part of the city marina for a mega-yacht service yard, died Sunday night in the Hospice unit at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center. She was 65.

Mrs. Bates, a cosmetologist for over 40 years and who was believed to have been the first licensed African-American beautician in Palm Beach County, died after a year-long bout with stomach cancer, said her son, Robert.

Robert said his mother had previously beaten breast and colon cancer.

Mrs. Bates was known as much for her work outside the beauty salon as she was for her work in it. She was the chairwoman of the Citizens Task Force, the group that gathered signatures to put the marina question on the Nov. 2 ballot last year. The ballot item called for a change to the city charter, banning industrial boat operations at the marina. It was approved with 54 percent of 8,221 votes that were cast.

"It shows that the people are concerned and care about what happens in their community," Mrs. Bates had said after the election.

Former City Councilwoman Lynne Hubbard said Mrs. Bates cared deeply for Riviera Beach.

"She was a true solider," Hubbard said. "No one worked harder for what they believed the residents in Riviera Beach deserved than Emma did."

Over the years, Mrs. Bates was the campaign manager for over a dozen candidates, Robert said. Hubbard said Mrs. Bates put in long hours during her successful campaign for City Council in 2007.

"She worked door-to-door," Hubbard said. "Some days I gave out before she did. She would say, 'No, we can do another street.'"

A native of Baxley, Ga., Mrs. Bates moved to the Glades as a child. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in West Palm Beach, Robert said she took a few business management courses at what is now Palm Beach State College. Mrs. Bates later attended hair school in Riviera Beach and ran her own hair salon, Intimate Salon of Beauty, in the city for years.

"She was an inspiration to a lot of local beauticians," Robert said. "Everybody loved her."

Mrs. Bates is survived by her two sons, Robert, a 37-year-old hairstylist and make-up artist and Lorne Bridges, a 45-year-old former Martin County sheriff.

Robert said his mother was cremated, but the family is planning a memorial service this weekend. He said everyone attending is encouraged to wear something pink.

"She loved that color," Robert said. "Even our Christmas tree and Rudolph's nose were pink."

Robert & Lorne,
As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family & friends. My mom and I will always keep your mother memories alive, she kept us laughing and smiling with her jokes and stories. I will never forget the story about driving to Carolina to the Dentist and don’t let Billy come in the shop and take over a conversation, boy she would let him have it, and we would be laughing and crying at the same time. Robert, Lorne, may your hearts be filled with wonderful memories and joyful times with your Mother, as we celebrate a life well lived.
Be Blessed

Robert and Lorne,
On behalf of The Whites, Bryants, and Leapharts, we offer our sincere sympathy. Emma was family to us too. We have memories of her when she was getting signatures for that petition. Emma and I seemed to always call Emily at the same time and we would get our hello's to each other.

We will continue to keep you all in our prayers. May you find comfort in knowing that GOD needed a perfect pink rose and Emma was the perfect one GOD was looking for so he took her.

Comfort one another and hold on to GOD's hand.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Emma truly lived up to the words "Well done my good and faithful servant." She worked tirelessly in Riviera Beach for issues that affected all residents of Riviera, especially us on the West Side. To her famliy you have a true legacy to live up to and be proud of, carry on her works and keep her memory alive for generations to come. She was an African American Hero in Riviera Beach history!. Emma will be missed by many.
