John J. Ammer, 80, of Pittsburgh, died Thursday, May 26th 2011. John was born in Pittsburgh on July 29th, 1930 to the late John P. Ammer and Stella T. (Woznicki) Ammer. A veteran of the Korean War, he served for four years in the Navy on the U.S.S. Waldron DD 699. Upon returning from service, he became cabinet maker with the Carpenters Union. Later, he joined the Pittsburgh Fire Bureau, serving for over 30 years before retiring as a Captain. John will be remembered as an avid fisherman and hunter. Passionate about gardening, he always shared his bounty with family and friends. Loved for his sense of humor, John always brought laughter into any situation. Beloved husband of the late Dorothy Mae (Sigmund) Ammer; loving father of Dennis (Karen) Ammer, Brenda (James) Harrison, Gary (Linda) Ammer and Jay (Vicki) Ammer; grandfather of twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
