Hans Borm Obituary

Hans Timothy Borm, 65, passed away quietly in his sleep on January 14, 2012. Hans was born on June 23, 1946 in Dayton, Ohio. He grew up in nearby Inglewood, Ohio, graduating from Northmont High School in 1964. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in August of 1965. He served in Vietnam, stationed at Da Nang Air Base. He left the Marine Corps in July of 1969. Hans married his long time sweetheart Judee Kennedy on February 14, 1970. After graduating from California State University Dominguez Hills, he became a teacher. He taught several years in Compton, California before moving his wife and two children to Porterville to accept a job teaching Mathematics at Bartlett Jr. High. Hans loved being a teacher. He also coached girl's volleyball and soccer. He was a coach for the Math Superbowl team. He taught chess at Bartlett, taking his teams to tournaments all across the state and across the country. His chess teams won several state titles and were ranked nationally. Hans later taught at Monache High School before retiring in 2007.

Hans had many hobbies and interests. He loved birds, raised and sold exotic parrots. He loved golf, Lindsay and Exeter were two of his favorite courses. He loved chess, played with friends and former students at home and at school. Most of all he loved people. He cherished family and friends. He enjoyed working with children, as a teacher, a coach, and a Boy Scout leader. He loved to play poker with his friends every Wednesday. He was friendly to everyone he met and always had a kind word and a smile to share. He had an enigmatic personality, full of odd quirks and traits that made him the man we all know and love.

He favored the comfort of a Hawaiian shirt and shorts, and was seldom seen without at least five pens and pencils in his pocket. He never left on a family trip without a frisbee in the car. He would chat up to total strangers, talk for 20 minutes to a wrong number, and strike up friendly conversations with telemarketers. He was a friend to all and had a humongous heart.

In the last three years, he welcomed three grandchildren into the world who quickly became the highlight of his life. He was never happier than when he was holding one of his grandkids, taking them to the store, reading them a story, or rocking them to sleep.

While he was taken from us too soon, we will cherish all the wonderful memories of him. Hans is survived by his wife Judee, his daughter Allison (Ed Talbot), his son Tyson (Ruthe Borm), and his grandchildren Cailyn, Logan, and Colby.

There will be a memorial service held on Saturday, January 21st at the Monache High School cafeteria at 1:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend. We encourage any who wish to attend to wear a Hawaiian shirt and to bring a snack or dessert if they so choose.

I was just sitting in my room, and Mr. Borm popped into my head. I never heard that he passed away. I had him for mathematics and computer programming in 1983 -84. I also got the guts to ask him if he needed help with the girls' volleyball team and made me an assistant coach! I missed the team photo for the yearbook, which he apologized for profusely. Great man, and we kept in touch for years after, when I worked at BASKIN ROBBINS. He LOOOVED ice cream. I can still hear him say, " Preguntas?" (Spanish for questions whenever he would finish explaining a lesson.) Great Man, Will be missed. I hope to see him and soo many others that have passed. RIP Mr. Borm. He truly made a difference.

Seems like I think of Tim, oops Hans, a lot and especially in January. As two 18 year old recent college dropouts we made the road trip of a lifetime in January 1965. We made it in Tim's/Hans' 1949 or 50 Chevy fastback painted a lime green with a brush. We left Dayton, OH on I-70/US-40 around the 22nd. It was spitting cold and in the teens. There was a hole in the floor board on the front passenger's side that we had covered with a piece of metal. Might have been a small one on the driver's side that was covered with an old license plate. Our clothes and life's belongings filled the backseat. One of us drove while the other slept. We would sit on the floor and put our head on the seat. We took a lot of No Doze on that trip. We picked up Route 66 in St Louis for the long haul to LA. Got stopped entering New Mexico by the State Highway patrol who were looking for escapees from a mental hospital. Picked up a hitchhiker going to LA, but decided he was a bit weird and dumped him in Albequerque. Remember descending in to LA from Riverside. LA was covered in smog, but stilled seemed better than Ohio. We were California Dreamin'. Thanks Tim/Hans for being a guy that would do crazy stuff with me. Here's a pic of a very clean Chevy Fastback. Ted B Wendeln

I just heard about this and I am sorry that I am so late..
I met Mr. Borm actually on the first day of 7th grade in 1990, I was a little lost in the halls.. He pointed me in the right direction. I will always remember him in his hawaiian shirt. I thought to myself he doesn't dress like a teacher. But come to find out he was the best teacher I ever had.. I was on his volleyball team, chess club and then also in the 8th grade I became a teacher aide for him.. I missed him in high school. He did make things simple and easy to remember.
The love he had for his birds also. He had the most beautiful birds..
I can go on and on about Mr. Borm.. He is such an awesome person

Darn, I'm too late. I met Hans back in 1987 when I was 18 years old. I was hitching my way from Southern Cali to Vancouver, WA when Hans picked me up somewhere near Porterville where he said he was a teacher. He had a car full of exotic birds that he was delivering to various customers along the interstate. We shared stories and ended up spending 2 wonderful days together and he took me all the way to my mom's house in Vancouver where he then stayed a few hours telling stories and playing us chess. I was really hoping to be able to say hi to him again after all these years. I will miss him, that trip turned out to be one of the best adventures of my life!

I just received the news of Tim's passing. He was Tim back in OH. Tim and I drove his 49 Chevy from Dayton to LA in Jan 1965. We had been friends in college and both decided to head to southern CA. It was one of those lifetime road trips. After not finding work, I came back to OH. I always thought that I'd get out to see him, but never made it. He was a great guy that I'm sure will be missed by all those who's life he touched.

I served with HT in the Marine Corps. We went to electronics school together in Memphis Tennessee, and were together in Viet Nam. We met often as possible at the Intruder reunions, and were planning to get together again this spring at the one planned for San Diego.
I considered him one of my closest friends in the Corps, and he will be sorely missed.

As everyone knows, Hans was one f the most friendly souls on the planet. In the chess world, he always smiling and diffusing the tension that you often could find at tournaments in which parents were too concerned about whether their children won or lost. I met Hans back in the mid-90's and his easy-going attitude about competitive chess was one that I chose to adopt. His influence has thus been felt by the tens of thousands of students that our organization has taught since I met Hans. To Hans's family - Thank you for sharing your husband, father, and grandfather with us. We are eternally grateful. Adios Hans. Until we meet again.

Mrs. Borm I am so sorry for the loss of Mr. Borm. He was one of my all time favorite teachers. I can remember be in class listening to music and when the song Another Hole in The Wall would play he would say, don't listen to that you do need an education.
He was the one that taught me how to play chess and had me join the math super bowl team. At the end of my 8th grade year the math super bowl team went to Magic Mountain, He was my riding partner anlong with Alli.
He would stop, give me a smile and talk with me.

I am sorry for your loss. I had Mr Borm for math, computer programming and I was in his chess club. My first trophy ever was from a chess tournament he hosted when I was 9. 31 yrs later, I still have the little trophy. In 1984, about 5 of us 7th and 8th graders were privileged to have him take us in his station wagon to the state chess tournament in San Francisco. We were lucky to have such a great teacher help us young kids build lifelong memories...

Hans Borm and I started employment in 1977 with the Porterville Unified School District. He had been a teacher in Compton and I had been with the adjoining school district in Paramount. Hans joined and fitted in very well with a top-notch staff at Bartlett Junior High School under the leadership of then principal, Richard Schlagel. Hans had excellent teaching and human relationships skills with both students and staff.

Hans contributed to the success of my middle son, Mark, who found friendship and a hobby with chess in the classroom of Hans Borm. Hans would usually have some 50 students in his classroom during lunch time at Bartlett learning and mastering the skills of chess. Hans also volunteered his time (he did NOT get extra pay for the chess meetings during lunchtime in his classroom) by having Tuesday evening chess meetings at school.

Fortunately, I thanked Hans several times during my son's seventh and eighth grade years (1986-88) for opening his classroom to students and what it meant to the success of my son. In meeting Hans in later years he would ask how Mark was doing. I told Hans that Mark was doing well and he (Hans) was one of the staff members at Bartlett who contributed to his success.

My wife, Ethyln, and I wish to extend to the family and close friends our sincere sadness at the passing of such a fine individual.

I had the privilege and fortune to have known Hans as a good friend and fellow chess player. He possessed a natural ability to draw you into his life, while enriching yours. Those he mentored and taught were destined to become better students and citizens. His contagious optimism and powerful belief in the goodness inherent in us all, is just one of many reasons why he will be missed so dearly. Whenever Hans needed help with anything, it made you feel good to help him out. Just being around Hans made you feel good. What a wonderful legacy.

My father Edward L. Brooks was a good friend of Mr Borm and never missed chess club for well over 30 yrs if he could help it. I was also a student in 8th grade. I'll never forget Mr Borm was at the hospital every day my dad was in the hospital before he passed. He was there makeing me and my family laugh. I loved him like he was family because he was. My condolences. Me and my family will be there to celebrate the life of this great man.

I haven't seen him in years but had the chance to be his FB friend. Reading and hearing what people wrote and said about him was great. He was a very special person that will never be forgotten. I feel lucky to have known such a great person that thought so much of others.

I was blessed to have been a student of his. I learned how to play chess about a month before I enrolled at Bartlett and joined the chess club mostly because Mr. Borm was my favorite teacher. A couple months learning under Mr. Borm and I was getting top ten finishes at tournaments. Some of the best memories from my childhood. I even signed up for the math bowl because I wanted to be able to go on more trips with him. I moved away before 8th grade so I only had the privilege of knowing him for 9 months but he was always someone I considered to be a role model. 15 years later I still think of him anytime I eat some Red Vines. My prayers are with his family.

Mr Borm will always be remembered as a kind individual who was a comfort to be around. While a student at Bartlett and MHS, I never had the pleasure of having him as a teacher, but he'd say "hello" and ask how I was doing. He seemed to know what I was up to in sports and what not, so it was obvious he cared for more than just his actual students. Again, he will be missed and memories cherished.

January 18, 2012

Mr. Borm was my all time favorite teacher. I had him for math and computer classes at Bartlett Jr. High. He was also my chess mentor in chess club and a great friend. After I left Porterville I would still see him every now and then when I came to visit. Just 3 weeks ago I stopped by his house on Christmas Day on the way home and chatted w/ him about life and family. He looked so full of life and happy. I am still in denial. Mr. Borm thanks for everything and helping me inspire in my career and life. You will be missed...

Hans was an incredible person. We first met when the teachers from Bartlett played the teachers from Pioneer. I made the mistake of running into him on the court...and I fell over. He was always friendly with me. We became closer as friends when we worked at Monache. I always loved the shirts he wore during professional development days. Hans welcomed me into his home and even invited my kids over to go swimming. Hans had a way of making me feel comfortable. The last I saw him was about a month ago. He was driving a Prius on Henderson and I was walking home from school(work). He did a complete turn around on Henderson just to pick me up. I will miss you Hans. I will miss your genuine personality, your quirky jokes and statements, your principles and most of all, your friendship.
