Richard Foutz Obituary

Richard Matthew Foutz, 70, of Rocky Mount, was ushered into his Heavenly home on Wednesday, August 24, 2011, after a courageous battle with lymphoma. Born and raised in Vinton, Va., he was preceded in death by his father, Elliot M. (John) Foutz; and by his loving and lovely wife, Carrie Holland Foutz.
Carrie and Richard were blessed with three wonderful sons, Matt Foutz and wife, Hila, of Martinsville, Scott Foutz, of Rocky Mount, and Chad Foutz and wife, Tammy, of Owensboro, Ky. Richard delighted in his grandchildren, Holland, Eli, Kailee and Tyler Foutz. He is also survived by a large and loving family including his mother, Ruth L. Foutz, of Vinton; brothers, Geryle Foutz and wife, Norma, Robert E. Foutz and wife, Doris, of Blue Ridge, Elliot M. Foutz Jr. and wife, Donna, of Vinton, Wiley E. Foutz and wife, Carol, of Vinton, and John W. Foutz, of Vinton; as well as his sisters, Susie F. Campbell and husband, Earl, of Vinton, Patsy F. Dingledine and husband, Charlie, of Vinton, and Mary F. Workman, of Roanoke; as well as many special nieces, nephews and extended family of Foutzs and Hollands. He is also survived by special friends, Sandra Coleman, and Garmon and Stella Flora.
Richard will always be remembered for his fun-loving, youthful approach to life, his delight in others' success, and his love of family, church, community, and athletics. He was inducted into Ferrum College's Sports Hall of Fame as a baseball and football standout. He was named Hank Norton's first MVP and All-American, exemplifying the highest ideals of athletics and sportsmanship at Ferrum College.
He earned a full football scholarship to the University of Richmond and completed a master's degree at Radford University. Fondly remembered as "Coach Foutz," he served 10 years as head football, track and junior varsity basketball coach at Franklin County High School, leading the teams to several championships. He was named High School Football Coach of the year in 1965. Following his years as coach, Richard was the Athletic Director of FCHS for an additional 10 years. He taught physical education at Burnt Chimney Elementary from 1987 until 2000 when he retired to care for his wife, Carrie, as she fought leukemia.
He is remembered and cherished by many for his positive influence on the youth in Franklin County and for his support of athletes and sports programs, including Little League baseball, Babe Ruth League and Sandlot Football for which he served as umpire and coach for many years.
He was an avid golfer and enjoyed his time on the greens with friends. He also enjoyed playing the guitar and performed with friends on stage at the Grand Old Oprey in Nashville on several occassions. He was a long-time and active member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Richard's life at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 28, 2011, at Franklin Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. J. Larry Holland and the Rev. Mark Griffith officiating. Interment will follow in the Holland Family Cemetery, Glade Hill. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hank Norton Center, c/o Ferrum College, P.O. Box 1000, Ferrum, VA 24088 or to Franklin Heights Baptist Church. His family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2011, at Franklin Heights Baptist Church. Matt, Scott, and Chad,
As you are well aware, your father was a fine man, and your mother was an equally incredible woman. Miss Holland was my 8th grade p.e. teacher, and Mrs. Foutz was my 9th grade p.e. teacher, and I later taught with both your father and mother. They were both compassionate, caring, and genuine, qualities also exemplified in the two of you that I taught and knew, and I'm sure in Chad, also. You may not be aware that your dad was very supportive to Spencer in his last few weeks, visiting and offering consolation that was greatly appreciated by both of us. He was also very caring and considerate of me after I lost Spencer. I could tell you of several occasions in which both of your parents displayed their well-known compassion. You are all so young to suffer such a great loss, but perhaps you can find solace in knowing that your parents' time on earth was well-spent and that they are together forever.

Ferrum College has lost a great leader, and all-aroung gentleman, and I lost a good friend. I will never forget his last visit with me in Fredericksburg. We had great fun talking about competing as coaches against each other. All of us who knew him will miss him greatly.

Ferrum has roots that grow wide, deep and far. I did not Richard because he was just a few years ahead of my time at Ferrum Jr. College, but I know he must have been one heck of a guy to have played ball there. I wish I had the opportunity to have known him. My most sincere condolances to not only his very dear family but also to his pals he played ball with at Ferrum. Dave Gordon, South Carolina "70"

Richard was and is an inspiration to me and I know he is in Heaven with Carrie now. He was my coach, my teacher, my principal and the father of one son I taught and another son who is one of the best golfers I have ever coached. Matt, Scott and Chad - your parents were two of the most special and wonderful people I have ever known. Their greatest legacy are the three fine sons they leave behind. Know that they are both together in Heaven, no longer in pain, and are waiting for us all. They both are my heroes and I will always feel their influence in my life. Richard - more than anything else, you became my respected and loved friend - you will not be forgotten!

I've followed Richard's journey, and although it didn't end with the worldly healing that was prayed for, he has found healing in the eyes of the Lord. Rest in peace, dear friend. You fought the good fight and won the ultimate prize. My prayers and thoughts are with all of your family at this time of loss.

An amazing man and someone that I deeply respected. He was a great man who won the game of life. He knew what he was as much as knew what he would be. Personable, reasonable in speech, and a man of God. He will be missed by many. Prayers to the whole Foutz family. May God's grace be sufficient in this time.

Thinking of you Chad! Your daddy taught me in elementary school that my classmates might all be bigger and stronger than me, but it's the little ones who are born to run. On that note, I think I'll dedicate my run today to that mountain of a man, Mr. Foutz:) Much love and many prayers.

Mr. Foutz was such an amazing man! I was blessed with a chance to meet up with him about a year ago and to catch up. I remember him helping me through my first day of elementary school! I had never really been away from my family at all, and he was so kind and helped walk me to my room, and even helped me on the way out to the buses that afternoon. He's been my favorite teacher ever since!!! He was such a caring man! May your family be comforted during this difficult time!

Coach Foutz and I go back to the 70's when I was first learning to drive and had driver's ed under his supervision. We shared many laughs and continued our friendship throughout the years. We reconnected later through a mutual friend (Tom Sawyers ) who also lost a battle to cancer. Richard was the dearest of friends and I will always cherish the memory of his sweet and loving nature.
God bless all of you and know that I share in your loss.
