William Davis Obituary

William Foster Davis was born December 10, 1923, and left this world on September 22, 2007. Although he spent the last nine years in failing health, he never once complained to the many people who loved him. He is preceded in death by his father Harry Arthur Davis, a veteran of World War I, his mother Neta Cox Davis, siblings Mary Ruth, Malcolm Edward, and George Arthur. He is survived by his three sons, Anthony Alexander Davis MD, William Victor Davis, and Omar Gibran Davis; his siblings James Walsh Davis, Charles Francis Davis, Clara June Odell, Alma Fay Davis, and grandchildren Alex, Paul, Zachary, Richard, Victoria, Gabriele, and numerous nieces and nephews. His squinty smile, calm nature, and unique mannerisms made him a true American Classic! Special thanks to his best friend Tony Zuba who selflessly cared for Bill for nearly a decade showing what true friendship and loyalty is all about. He will be missed by all who knew him and we will live by his example of warmth and compassion from a man who in his final years could say I Love You and really mean it. So long Dagger, but only for now. Funeral service at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Oct. 19, 2007 at 1:30 pm. Photo tribute at www.legacy.com. Olinger Mortuary Service.

It was a wonderful ceremony at Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery and so nice to see so many "lost" relatives and friends. The gun salute was especially impressive with seven rifles firing three times. A friend, who had recently lost her father, had a similar military funeral in New York State and was not as fortunate as us to have had the playing of "Taps" (perhaps it has to do with the availability of bugle players). That one "splatted" note only made the whole thing seem more real as our bugle player had excellent tone on all the other notes. Here to was a reminder that we are all only human and like my father, ultimately, come to the same end! It was nice to know that one of the young flag-folding soldiers was on medical leave recovering from a wound received in Iraq and that it was a great honor for him to be a part of these ceremonies for our veteran heroes. Looking through many of Dad's black and white war pictures made me realize that there were some questions I should have asked him. Even with all the advance knowledge of my mother's death over two years ago, I am still left with questions I should have asked her. When my time comes, I hope my sons will have felt they knew everything they wanted to know about their father. But, as they grow older they will live their own lives and dream their own dreams until one day, they too will have questions unaswered: "Dad, didja' really have platform heels and long hair in the early 70s?" or "Didja' see Apollo 11 land on the moon on a black and white TV when you were just nine years old?" I wonder....
Will be adding some pictures to this site very soon! Found an old 8mm color movie of my parent's wedding which was probably not played since 1957 as we had no reel-to-reel projector then. I have one now and viewed part of the movie and it was so FABULOUS I turned it off fearing some failure of the projector or film. For those of you who do not know, my parents had the most fairy tale royal wedding you could have imagined in Tehuacan, Mexico!! When I can make a camcorder copy, I will play it to the end but for now, it is stored with great anticipation! Thanks to everyone who attended my father's funeral and check back soon!

Tony, William, and Omar I am so sorry for the loss of your father. Mother sends her love and her regrets for not being able to attend the services for Uncle Bill due to her health. Love you all and you are in our hearts and prayers.

As "across the street" neighbors we got to know Bill and Ana well as they raised their 3 boys. Both were fun to be around and talk to. It was very riveting to listen to Bill tell about some of his escapades with the police department. Though Bill was bedridden the last several years he was in our thoughts and we often marveled at the way he "played the hand that was dealt him". Now at peace. Truly a fine man and neighbor.

Thanks to everyone for their kind comments of my father. My brothers and I will be at Ft Sam National Cemetery Fri. October 19,2007 for his memorial. We invite everyone who can to be there at 1:30pm. If you have never been to a military funeral, I hear it is quite an experience with more than its share of pomp and circumstance along with a 21 gun salute! My father will no doubt be looking down upon the ceremony and smiling at all his friends and family! Thanks again to all those who brightened my father's life and to those who feel that there life was made better by knowing a man such as him! His eldest son, Tony

It was a pleasure learning police work from "Bill" Davis. Never a harsh word from the gentleman.
