It's hard to express the shock of realizing it was Joe. I'd known him since 1972 when I worked with him in the Materials Lab at the City of San Jose. Later as a civil engineer, I dealt with him often. He was a straight shooter. No B.S. He simply said what was. I'll always remember Joe and his close friend Gerry Brown, two big men walking together. Now both gone.

My heart aches for the tragic loss of a beautiful life. I had the pleasure of knowing this amazing family while growing up in Aptos and loved running into Joe around town. His daughter was a good friend of mine in high school and it was wonderful hearing him talk about her achievements in life and to see how proud he was of her. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family, I'm so sorry for their loss..

Words can not express the shock we felt upon hearing of the loss of Joe & Edy. We first met before they were married and shared some great times early on in their life together. I worked with Joe for many years after he came back to San Jose from his Military Service. You could not have had a better friend. Sure glad we were able to share their 40th Anniversary with them thanks to their daughter Marlene. Joe And Edy will always be in our thoughts. Our prays are now for Marlene.

I was first shocked, then deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of life of my dear childhood friend "Big Joe" and his wife of many years, Edy. The knowledge of that horrendous event caused me to reflect on the safe haven of childhood memories of chatting on the front porch of the big white house on the corner of St. Madar & Monday Streets and riding around town in Mobile, Alabama in his family's '55 Black Buick. We both graduated from Most Pure Heart of Mary High School, class of 1959, the 33 of us. I went off to Hampton and Johnnie Henderson packed up her family, said goodbye to Mobile and headed for California...Gosh, the Purity, Charity and Innocents we found in those times back then...I wonder if my dear friend found comfort in those memories as he bade us goodbye, just as I am doing now, trying to reconcile this most tragic event. Rest In Peace Big Joe, friends forever...Louis A. Johnson (Maple Street Demons).

I met Joe and Edy not long after they were married at their apartment on 11th St in San Jose. Sam and I were invited to dinner. What a gracious host and great cook! Joe kept us entertained while we ate and watched football. I went with her to view model homes when they bought their 1st house. We were all so proud! We got season tickets to the opera and went 2 years in a row. She drove us in a yellow Dodge Charger. We laughed about the "opera windows" in the back. We sneaked into a jazz festival at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. Went to watch John Handy in the city at Stearn Grove. I have so many rich and wonderful memories from the late 60's and early 70's. I will never forget you. You were always together having fun. I am so thankful for the times we were together! I know I will see you both again! All my love . . Darlene Magee.

Joe and Edyth gave my husband and I our wedding shower in 1970 at their San Jose home. I ran into Joe on the train when he was going up to the City just a few years ago but we had lost touch with them. Joe and my husband went through college together and hung out for years, both loving jazz so much. Other pals were Sam Parraz, Dino Hayman. We want so much to attend the memorial. Please let people know when and where. We are so deeply, deeply sorry for this terrible loss.
With great affection for them,
