I have been a patient of Dr. Knopp for a number of years and believe that his diligent treatment of me has done a world of benefit as I have yet to experience any heart attack whatsoever, despite astronomical levels of triglycerides. I will continue praying the Holy Rosary for the disposition of his eternal soul. He helped many, many people and may God bless him eternally for his expert care of us all.

After having a heart attack in 2001 at the age of 40, I began seeing Dr. Knopp. His deep committment to myself and his patients has kept many of us alive. He was truly one of God's gifts to all he touched. I imagine him whistling away in Heaven, shaking the hand of all those he encounters. May God be with you, his family, as you grieve this tremendous lose. I will miss him, but always remember what he did for me.

I just learned about Bob's passing and wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the family.
Bob was my default primary doc, and a friend, whom I looked forward to seeing every 6 months, along with Jan, Alice, and Kathryn at the NW Lipid Research Clinic.
My father Gilbert Leak was in the Lipid Clinic's 10 year test prox 1975-1985, and I began seeing Bob soon thereatfer as Gil's legacy.
We have all lost a very good man, but I won't forget him.

I was a patient of Dr. Knopp's since 1996. I am extremely sad to hear of his sudden passing. My condolences to family, friends, colleagues and fellow patients. He was certainly one of the most competent, brilliant and compassionate doctors that I have ever had the pleasure to work with. Often I would be the first patient in the clinic and you would always know when he arrived because he would be whistling a song. One of his many gifts was that he could explain complex medical topics in a way that was accessible to a non-medical person - such as myself. He freely shared his terrific sense of humor along with his joy of life. He will be missed.

Judy, Elizabeth and Eleanor,
My thoughts are with you and your families as you grieve for your beloved husband, father and grandfather. I haven't seen Bob in years, but have enjoyed running into you, Judy, on occasional walks around our Mt. Baker neighborhood, and catching up on what and how your family is doing. I was catching up on newspapers after being out of town when I saw the news of Bob's death. What a shock! I'm so sorry for your loss.

I am shocked to hear of Dr. Knopp's passing. I sought a lipid specialist in Seattle in 2003 while my mother was in the hospital for a quadruple bypass. Thank God I found Dr. Knopp. What a lovely man and caring physician who was so knowledgeable about all cholesterol issues. I always enjoyed talking and laughing with him at my visits. My deep condolences to his family and also the staff at NWLRC. He will be deeply missed. Seattle has lost a great doctor. (Donna Dimof, Poulsbo)

I was shocked to hear of Dr. Knopp's passing. Bob was my mentor for my PhD research project. Not only was he a wonderful doctor, but also researcher. He provided me with the skills I reinforce with my MS dietetic graduate students daily. He asked the tough questions to help me grow, but also could easily share a laugh and a smile. I want to share my condolescences with Alice, Bobbie, Brian, and the rest of the NW Lipid Clinic staff along with his family. I will be forever grateful for the time I spent with him. His knowledge and kindness were exceptional. I will miss him.
June 15, 2010
In the late 1970s, my physician referred me to Bob because I was overweight and had significantly elevated serum cholesterol and triglycerides. I was pleased to find him to be very bright and straightforward, but also kind, unassuming and caring. After a period of evaluating my lifestyle and eating habits, he suggested a program of changes to mitigate my presenting problems. I am sure that he was pleased when I proceeded to religiously follow his advice.
Over a period of time, I lost 50 pounds and my serum lipids dropped to well within the normal range, where they remain to this day. I owe Bob a debt of gratitude for helping me to improve my quality of life, my health and, no doubt, my longevity. I shall remain forever in his debt .
I can empathise with his family, as I lost my wife of nearly 50 years one year ago. I can offer no advice, but I do offer my sincere best wishes as they find their way along the path that I have come to know only too well.

Dear Judy, Elizabeth and Eleanor,
Emily and I were shocked -- just plain shocked to read of Bob's passing. I just happened to scan the oobituaries that day; I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
We thought that Bob was healthy -- at least as healthy as we are. And now he is gone.
We could not attend the funeral. But every time we will go to St. James, we will be thinking of him. And we will be reminded of him when we see his little grandson. He was blessed to be with his grandson.
Emily and I are sad, really sad, that you and we have lost Bob.
Love,

To the family of Robert Knopp: I was a colleague and fellow lipid nut with Bob; I conducted research in some of the same areas as him and had the pleasure of interacting with him at many investigator and consultant meetings. I hold him in very high regard. I have found him to have intellectual honesty, high integrity, compassion for others, a gracious nature toward fellow scientists, and contributed mightily to the body of science in this field. He was greatly admired and will be missed. My warmest condolences to all who loved him and morn his passing.

Dear Judy, Eleanor, & Family,
I was so sad to hear of Dr. Knopp's death. I remember him fondly. He was one of my mom's (Barbara McGinnis) favorite people, someone she admired for decades. I will never forget what a great advocate he was for her as a doctor, manager, and friend while she was sick.
There is very little consolation to offer when someone so beloved is lost before it is time. It can at least serve as a reminder to us that each day is precious and we should strive every day to have as much positive impact in this world as Dr. Knopp. Sometimes just remembering how many people he touched directly and indirectly through is life, his family, and his truly outstanding work can help ease the sting a bit as well. Let this note serve as one more more reminder.
I was sorry to miss the service, I was out of town for the weekend camping with my daughters (Bob would have approved I’m sure). I understand there may be a service at Harborview as well. I would like to be included if appropriate, to represent my mom and to be able to greet you personally. If it doesn’t work out, please accept my sincerest condolences for your loss and highest praise for what a great person Bob was.

Professor Bob Knopp;
It was great sorrow to me and Miyako to learn of Prof. Bob Knopp’s death on the 30th of May. We are deeply grieved to hear the sudden passing of Bob. We were very much surprised and so were shocked to learn of his passing away. We wish to offer our sincerest condolences upon this sad event.
I spent one year sabbatical year in NWLRC in 1979, and received many scientific, clinical and social educations by Bob. He was so gentle, friendly and kind to us as well as my family. I was invited to dinner by Bob and Judy more than 10 times during my stay in Seattle. We invited Bob and Judy twice to Japan for scientific meeting. Thereafter we have had many opportunities to meet. We met Judy and Bob in last June in Boston, which became our final meeting. I lost my great teacher, scientist, clinician and best friend, but I will remember him forever.
Please accept our sincerest condolences to Judy and your family. We have no words to properly express our sorrow for the passing away of Bob.
We hope Judy and your family will recover from the sorrow very soon.

Darling Dr Knopp;
Beloved healer, scholar, family member, friend and mentor....
I write this tear-filled note with immense love and great regret. I learned of your passing on Thursday afternoon. My initial wish was to turn back the clock to late April of this year. I was visiting Seattle at this time. To have had the opportunity to give you a huge hug and get caught up on life while we still had your cherished soul on planet earth would have been such a blessing...something I had promised you we would do upon my return this summer....
You are so precious to so many. My final wish is for your reunion with other loved ones who have passed on before you. This includes Dr John Coombs. Perhaps you can spend time together strategizing on something you both are so passionate about and visionary on--enhancing nutrition in medicine. :)
With my deepest sympathy, and endless love & well wishes to you & family,

I had the good fortune of working with Bob Knopp at NWLRC for many years. Bob was an amazing leader and facilitator. He willingly gave credit for successes but was always available to problem-solve challenges. Over the years, most staff left the clinic only when they stopped working. The current staff has worked for Dr Knopp between 9 and 25 years. Previously two head nurses, Peggy Poole and Barb McGinness, liked working with Bob so much they retired not once or twice but three times each.
Dr Knopp had a zest for life. He gave 150% to his work, his staff and his patients. He always looked for the positive in each situation and every individual. His passing leaves a big hole in our lives.

One of the joys of living in our neighborhood was having Bob as a friend and neighbor. "Alley chats" with Bob always brightened one's day, regardless of the topic. His enthusiasm for his work and research was inspiring. Most touching was his pride in and love for Judy, Elizabeth and Eleanor. Bob lives on in all of our hearts.

I've known Dr. Knopp since I was child and he seemed larger than life to me. My memories of him include
a booming, baritone laugh that could be heard clear down the hallways of his clinic, his boundless energy, quick wit, warm heart, and a deep knowledge of the soul as well as medicine. Dr. Knopp was great man
of immense talent and was a wonderful mentor who always made time to give guidance to a young man who looked
up to him with sincere adoration.
I will always hold a special place in my heart for him. He had a beautiful
family and my deepest condolences go out to his wife Judy, and his daughters Elizabeth and Eleanor.

IN MEMORIAM FOR DR. ROBERT KNOPP
I think that Louis Pasteur had friends. I’d guess that Jonas Salk was a good family man.
I’m not sure, because I never knew those guys… I knew another medical marvel. I knew Bob Knopp…
Realizing that Bob’s medical achievements and honors reflect a prodigious accumulation that warrants international acclaim, I speak for those of us who know Bob as a neighbor, friend, and just all-around great guy.
Bob’s professional accolades make good copy and provide a benchmark for his professional comrades, yet it’s his accolades as a neighbor and friend that far exceed any acclaim his cotemporaries may bestow on him.
Bob was our Christmas Caroling trombone player. He was serious about it. OK, he knew it to be a recreational endeavor to lead a bunch of off-key neighbors in the December darkness, but he tried to keep us on key.
Bob was a normal classy guy - someone with an “Andy Williams” cloth cap and a smiley face. Bob was a talk, dark, and handsome prototype father, husband, and friend. His devotion to music and the out-of-doors was legendary to all who knew him. His daughters, Elizabeth and Elinor, are everyone’s dream progeny.
Bob never ever dropped in a self-aggrandizing comment in a neighborly conversation such as, “I just got back from Europe and an international conference, where I presented our papers and was featured in the global medical review of science…” No, no, Bob never let on that he was important. Oh yes, after the fact, we learned that he was the one that formulated and led the lipid-study of Boeing Executives. We were more likely to bump into Bob at Tradewell’s vegetable display than to rejoice with him about his breakthrough studies. Instead of medical talk, we were likely to hear, “How ‘bout those M’s?” Or, “I saw you at the Chamber Music performance, wasn’t that cellist something?”
Indeed, at a time when we are reaching outside our mundane pop-culture world to experience classical music as wannabes, we’d observe Bob and Judy in their normally cultured setting absorbing classical performances. We reached beyond our world into theirs – classical culture was their lifeblood.
So, yes, Dr. Robert Knopp set the highest standards ad reached the ultimate medical goals of pushing new medical research into our modern culture. Yes, Dr. Robert Knopp led clinical trials that changed the face of modern treatment of lipid conditions. Yes, he deserves the professional accolades of a generation, but to us… he was a friend and role model. To us, he was a rock of smiling personal fulfillment. To us, he played the trombone and failed to keep us on key or in tempo.
Now, we’ll try to sing Christmas Carols without him, and we’ll miss our smiling, handsome, tromboning leader. We’ll miss Bob…

I have worked with Dr. Knopp at the NW Lipid Research Clinic for 13 years and it is safe to say it has been the best job I ever had. Every good thing that the Lipid clinic has achieved is due to his leadership. We employees have had as much benefit from his generous and kind spirit as his patients; which is saying a lot. He treated us all with respect and valued our ideas and input. We enjoyed his intellect, humor, political views, and loyalty to the staff. We miss him very much. To Judy, Eleanor, Elizabeth and all his other family members, you have my deepest sympathy. Attached is a picture of some of his favorite things, his doctor bag, lab coat, spider plant and one of the "retro" pink chairs that have followed him to each new clinic space.

We grieve for Bob and remember him as a remarkable musician. For over ten years I was a happy alto in Bob's little traditional choir at St. Therese Church. We sang beautiful classic music, the Latin masses, Mozart, Pergolesi, Brahms, etc. As with the rest of his endeavors he devoted himself to choosing, studying, and preparing with great enthusiasm our performances. For Christmas and Easter he would hire some of Seattle's finest professional musicians to accompany us. On special occasions Bob would play his trombone and Eleanor her violin. We made beautiful music. Eventually we were disbanded as one man can do only so much. Bob and his gift of music remain a fond memory. Mary Kenny

I am deeply saddened by Dr. Knopp's passing and not only for his family but for his wonderful staff at Lipid, who I know are hurting deeply. I've been a patient of Dr. Knopp's for nearly 20 years and truly believe that his care and compassion and that of all the folks at Lipid has saved my life. When I heard of his death I thought first of the booming laugh and then the trains. I will miss him.
Please know that he and his family and loved ones are in my prayers. And I'm sure that we are all in his, and still in his care.

I also knew Dr. Knopp as a neighbor and something of a second father figure as I spent many an hours in the Knopp household as a child with my best friend, his daughter Elizabeth. I remember his zest for life, sense of humor, and wonderful laugh. One fond memory I have is of Dr. Knopp driving us home from soccer practice. We came down a giant hill from the top of Beacon hill and without fail, Dr. Knopp would speed up and zoom over the bumps, sending us airborne for a few seconds and drawing squeals of laughter from the back seat. While I knew little of his professional life, it does not surprise me in the least to hear of his dedication, scholarship, and compassion for his patients. He was a wonderful human being in all aspects of his life and will be greatly missed. I and the entire Bushley family send our love, support, and sympathy to the Knopps.

Bob Knopp was our next-door neighbor for more than 30 years, and beloved by all our family. In reading his obituary and the many tributes to his life, I am struck most by how little I knew of his professional accomplishments. He was as humble, warm, and appealing as he was gifted as a scholar and researcher. Our family has not quite accepted that he is gone. All we know is that the alley off College Street -- with its trio of excellent Bobs -- will never be the same without that sweet whistle and sudden booming laugh. We will miss him so very much. Sending all our love to Judy, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Rob, and little Will....from Bob and Betty Burns, and the Vaughan family -- Bob, Kath, Daniel, Eliza, Elizabeth, and Sarah.

What a great guy Dr Knopp was. He was my grad school thesis chair and gave me my 1st job out of grad school.
I was intimidated during my 1st few meetings w/ him, especially when he'd just sit there w/ his head in his hands, thinking, quietly, only to pop up all of a sudden and say, "I've got it!", and continue on w/ our discussion of the current project.
He was also a great leader, and always made everyone's contribution feel like it was essential. Someone already commented on his laugh, and they were right on--it was infectious and jolly and great!
There's not many people like Dr Knopp, and he will be missed for sure. Thanks to his family for sharing him with us.

Dr. Knopp was my Chairman when I was in Endocrinology for 13 years; he was a very kind, sweet, and talented person and leader. Then I became his patient in the Lipid Clinic for the last year and a half; being a patient, I got to know what a wonderful and caring physician Dr. Knopp was. Every time he saw me at the Clinic, he was teaching the residents at the same time; it was always so fascinating to hear him explain to the residents about my medical findings, etc. I will miss him tremendously; I will never be able to find another lipid physician that has the knowledge and talents that Dr. Knopp had. I was shocked to hear the news about the loss of one of the true scholars of our time.
He was knowldegeable about so many areas and he encourged free and open learning as he quested for unbridled truth.
He was an inspiration to me as a collegial friend who always took the road less traveled. Few know how to relate their expertise in the arenas of other disciplines ..not so for our friend. He embraced and learned and taught others
God gave him the gift of being able to bring out the best in others

I was honored to have Dr. Knopp as one of my physicians. Though I always recognized his brilliance as a clinician and scholar, it was his booming laugh that filled his clinic that will be so greatly missed. He had a passion for life and for his patients. I was always intrigued by the photos of railroad trains throughout his office. I was shocked to read his obituary, as he always seemed so healthy. I was also shocked to see his age, as I never thought he was older than perhaps his early 60s.
