I remember her as vice principal. I did not have much interaction with her, but she always seemed pleasant, friendly, professional, dignified, kind, someone who cared about serving well. At the time, as a student, it made a good impression on my memory, even if, at the time in my youth, I did not appreciate those qualities as deeply as now. When I read another comment that "she sat behind me in Church many years," that influence seems consistent with what I could observe about her character.

Mary was very helpful and nice to me as a beginning teacher. She was a very special person I will miss her.

Coach Varley was definitely one of my favorite teachers at Horace Mann. We moved to the "new" Horace Mann Jr. High in the spring of 1952 as seventh graders from Wilson Jr. High. She was my counselor along with another wonderful teacher, Miss Ulvestad. Coach was my PE teacher in 8th and 9th grade. She was also our sponsor for the GAC, Girls Athletic Club, at a time when we didn't have Title IX and the opportunities for girls' sports were limited. But she always encouraged us to get involved in sports. Although 57 years have past since she was my teacher, I fondly remember her and can see her in beige bermuda shorts and a crisp white shirt with her whistle around her neck. A special lady and teacher, God Bless her. Darlene Pierceall Cason.

I have many fond memories of Mary. We worked together at the opening of Horace Mann Jr. High. She was a very special person and will be missed.

Miss Varley was my P.E. teacher back in the 50's and one of my
favorite teachers. I had a lot of respect for her.
May she rest in peace and I thank her for the good influence she
was in my life
