STEVEN MCBEE Obituary

Steve McBee, beloved son, brother, husband, and father passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2011 due to complications from diabetes and congestive heart failure.

Steve is survived by his wife of 39 years, Stephanie(Federal Way), son Kevin(Auburn), daughter Megan(Boston), mother Elizabeth and Herman Kurth (Mount Vernon), sister Kathy and Don Case (Montesano), and nephew Ian Case (Marysville).

Steve graduated from Stanwood High School in 1967 and Western Washington State College in 1972 with a BA in Elementary Education.

Steve was very proud to have been a Washington State Park Ranger for 35 years. He spent his first year at Alta Lake State Park, then 25 years at Federation Forest State Park near Greenwater, and the last 9 years at Dash Point and Saltwater State Parks in Federal Way and Des Moines. Steve served as the President of the Washington State Park Rangers Association during his tenure with parks. Interpretation was the aspect of the job he enjoyed the most.

Steve's passion in life was golf. He was the past president of the Enumclaw Men's Club and the Tacoma Golf Association. He was the PNGA and WSGA representative for both Enumclaw Golf Club and Twin Lakes Golf Club. He was a volunteer course rater for the Washington State Golf Association for over 20 years. He was currently serving on the Board of Trustees for Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club. Steve was always willing to share his love of the game and was ready to tee it up anytime, anywhere, with anyone looking for a game.

A Celebration of Steve's life will be held on Monday, October 17 at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club from 3-5 PM.

Remembrances may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Tacoma Golf Association Junior Scholarship program.

I viewed Steve as a true representation of what it is to be a public servant. His anecdotal approach to his work and life was inspiring. I enjoyed his "old sage" words each time I crossed paths with him. A gentle spirit and wise man. He will be missed by everyone and it is sad to think so many will miss the opportunity to know him. Thank you Steve for setting the bar so high!

I went to work for State Parks in 2001 as a Ranger-In-Training under Steve McBee. His enthusiasm and passion for what he did was contagious. It only seemed fitting that on several ocassions he would suit-up in the Eager Beaver costume and greet the public. I appreciated his sense of humor along with the smile he would give you while dealing with some pretty challenging situations that arose in the urban park setting. It was my priviledge to have worked with him! Our thoughts and prayers are with Stephanie, Megan, Kevin and the rest of his family.

What a shock to hear this about great guy, we played many rounds of golf together, had many private talks~ steve is a true person never will forget his style of laughing. We Traveled state wide to many places together work meetings~ fun events- one on one golf the last 25 years before he retired. Steve always talked of his family first-- and did not hesitate to discuss where improvements at Parkville were needed. He was the Fed Forest Guru.. WSPRA golf events we always wanted Steve on our team.. You get Steve on the team and we had good chance to win.. We will send remembrance as the family wishes. God Bless you Steve.

It was always a treat to be in Stevie's foursome. The pleasure of listening to his take on life made him so easy to be around...and man...could he tag a golf ball! He was a genuine person who's keen wit and wry smile will stay with me forever.

It was my privilige to work with Steve both as a park planner, and as a member of the State Parks Interpretive Committee that he supported for so long. His insights and enthusiasm helped us all along the way. It's a real loss for us all.

I am saddened to hear of his passing as well. Steve impressed me as someone who saw the bigger picture in park management and the world in general. He taught me a lot on the golf course as well, and was someone who loved the game and loved sharing it with others. He will be in my memory forever. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and many friends. -Jack Hartt
