Roberta James Obituary

Feb. 19, 1942 - March 13, 2011
SOUTH BEND - Ms. Roberta B. James of South Bend, Indiana, passed on from her earthly life as a Christian woman to her promised home with The Heavenly Father on March 13, 2011. Roberta was born on February 19, 1942, in Bigbee, Mississippi, to the union of Robert B. and Ida M. Boatman-Johnson. Roberta graduated from Washington High School in 1960, and soon after obtained certification as a Surgical Technician, working at Memorial Hospital with 42 years of service, retiring in 2004. During her tenure, Roberta was repeatedly recognized for an excellence in service, which has established a rapport and remembrance by a vast multitude of co-workers who she taught and mentored. Noted that Roberta accepted Christ at a young age, she served faithfully at her church, Greater Saint John Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Andre' A. McGhee. Roberta was an active member of the Gospel Chorus until she became ill. Roberta had a nurturing spirit to all who came into relationship with her. Roberta was recognized for her medical knowledge, sewing talents, bookkeeping skills, and love of crossword puzzles. In early adulthood, Roberta served on various bowling leagues. Roberta leaves in her cherishing of memories two daughters, Stephanie (Ronald) Henry of South Bend, Indiana, and Kimberly (Kenneth) James-Williams of Red Oak, Texas; her mother, Ida M. Johnson; a sister, Diana (Elliott) Callahan of Cedar Hill, Texas; and two brothers, both of South Bend, Indiana, Rev. Eugene R. and Lionel (Brenda) Johnson; five grandchildren, Demetrius Anderson of Murrayville, California, Rashanna D. Henry of South Bend, Mermon (Tre') Elliott, Kenstyn and Kollyn Williams, all of Red Oak, Texas. Roberta was known for her beautiful smile, giving nature, virtue and integrity. Having friendship with Roberta was an ownership of wealth, as she was as precious as a jewel. Preceding her in death were her father, Robert B. Johnson, and a granddaughter, Shannon Henry. Celebration of her life will take place on Thursday, March 17, 2011, in Greater Saint John Missionary Baptist, 101 N. Adams Street. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. and then services at 12:00 noon. Burial ceremony will follow at Highland Cemetery. Visit our website at www.clarkoneal.com to sign her guestbook.
