Charles Putnam Obituary

Putnam III, Charles William of Christiansburg, VA died in the early morning of January 6th, 2013. He exemplified outstanding courage in a 4 year battle against lung cancer. Charles was 63; born March 29, 1949 in Saint Louis, MO. He graduated high school from Our Lady of Good Counsel Seminary in 1967. In 1972 he graduated with a degree in Biology from the University of Missouri after having attended Sacred Heart Major Seminary and then Eastern Illinois University where he won a national championship in soccer. Charles strove to be a man of God and seeking Him was his life's vocation. He sought God's presence in nature. For him, natural beauty was a refuge from the blight of material things. He believed that genuine regard for the order of natural systems brought one closer to God's simple truth of harmony. In service to this belief, he worked as a wildlife biologist for the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service for the greater part of his career. After an early retirement he worked part-time as director of Montgomery County's Gypsy Moth Program and continued to enjoy nature as much as he could. Charles also found God in scholarly rigor. He wrote and read daily for his entire life. In the weeks prior to his passing he finalized a manuscript of his book, a culmination of his lifelong passion for science and theology. The book will be published posthumously by his family. Above all else, Charlie found God in his love for people near to him. His father Charles, father-inlaw Robert Linkous, and sister-inlaw Mary Ellen precede him in death. He is survived by all other family members: his mother Patricia, his brothers Timothy, Daniel, James (Marcia), Michael (Theresa), Thomas, Robert (Lori), Richard, and his sisters Jane Rothery (Daniel), Barbara, and Mary. All live in or around St. Louis, MO except Michael who lives in Redwood City, CA. Also surviving him are his sister- and brother-in-law Rebecca Kakaley (Russ) of Charlotte, NC and Mark Linkous (Deanne) of Christiansburg, VA. Charlie married his loving wife Rose Mary Linkous Putnam 29 years ago. The couple has three children, Christian, Jessica, and Samantha. The couple resided for 19 years in Van Buren, MO before returning to Rosemary's native Christiansburg, VA. All are students studying at Virginia Tech, Radford University, and Christiansburg High School, respectively. Services: The family will receive family and friends from 5-8 PM on Tuesday evening at HORNE Funeral Home in Christiansburg, VA. A funeral mass celebrating Charles' life will be held Wednesday January, 9 at 10 AM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Christiansburg, VA. Interment will follow at Belmont Cemetery in Christiansburg, VA. Flowers are appreciated but in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Pregnancy Resource Center (708 North Main Street Suite 200, Blacksburg, VA 24060) or the American Cancer Society (2849 Electric Rd. Suite 206, Roanoke, VA 24018). Additionally, a memorial service will be held in St. Louis, MO in a coming week for friends and family. The date is unknown as of yet. The family extends a special thanks to Dr. Harry McCoy and the staff of Blue Ridge Cancer Care in Christiansburg, VA for the extraordinary respect and expertise on which Charles remarked time and time again. My prayers and thoughts are with you, Charlie's family, at this time.

I was deeply saddened when I heard the news of Charlie.

While attending Prep and being in a class a few years younger ('69) I never really had much interaction with Charlie. That all changed in September 1970 when I happened to be walking across campus at Mizzou in Columbia and bumped into Charlie. Over the course of the next few months we quickly became very close friends spending a lot of time together resulting in some great adventures. We both liked the outdoors and spent much of our time hiking throughout Missouri. Charlie was majoring in Wildlife Biology and as we would go tromping through the woods he would suddenly blurt out "Do you know you just stepped on a 'Rubus occidentalis?" [Blackberry] and then would start laughing uncontrollably. In addition to being a true Naturalist, he was also very spiritual. I have always treasured the time we had together in Missouri in '70s. It was a true grace and privilege to have been his friend.

My children became more enlightened in their faith in God with Charlie guiding their lessons. They still remember the powerful classes he taught them in their formative years. God bless his soul and his wonderful family. What a blessing they've been to so many. That's exactly how it's supposed to be done.

Our family was so blessed to have Charley. In his quiet humble way he showed so much love and respect for everyone. He loved his family, friends and nature and above all God. He lived his faith everyday. He inspires me to be a better person. Charley will be missed dearly but he will live on in memory. Your loving sister.

Dear RoseMary, Sam, Jessica, and Christian -
I am so terribly sorry to hear about the loss of your husband/father. I have always enjoyed having a moment to converse with him, especially during these last few years at Sam's lessons. He was always so friendly, always concerned about Sam, and always asking for a pen (it made me chuckle because sometime i would have it ready before he even had to ask). He will be greatly missed in the community and by those who were fortunate enough to have met him. I know your family is strong and will come together during this time of grieving. If you need anything, please don't hesitate to let me know. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers.

Charlie was my boyhood hero! I attended the Passionist Seminary 1965-69 and Charlie was one of the most caring and thoughtful individuals in my memory. I felt that he paid special attention to me and nutured my budding athletic endeavors. Charlie was the star athelete in everything he attempted, yet was the most humble individual I knew. I am sorry that I never found a way to stay in touch with him. My prayers are with his family. I will always cherish his memory.

It is very very sad to learn of Charley's passing. I had the privilege of knowing him since college days at Mizzou as a skilled outdoorsman, a dedicated conservationist, and as a true and faithful friend.

Charley was a wide reader, a deep thinker, and an engaging conversationalist who always had something worthwhile to say and reflect upon.

Most of all he loved his family and was a man of his church and his faith. In his last years, he showed forth a splendid courage, endurance, and grace.

It was an honor to be his friend and I will miss him terribly. Thoughts and prayers to Rose Mary, Christian, Jessica, Samantha, his mom Pat, and all his wonderful family.

Our Passionist family joins our prayer to many others in support of Charlie's family, and likewise pray in thanksgiving for Charlie's life that touched so many. He was my classmate from the Prep Seminary (1967), and I fondly recall Charlie's genuine love for God, people, and creation -- and his many gifts, esp. in athletics. I'm honored to have been part of his life back in our high school days. May he enjoy the blessings of heaven!
