Jason Gates Obituary

Jason Christopher Gates December 10, 2009 Jason Christopher Gates, of South Dartmouth, MA, passed away December 10, 2009, in Orlando, FL. He was born August 11, 1972, to Reeder and Sally Snow Gates in Ithaca, NY. He was active in any sport that came his way from an early age. It was at age six that he formed his great love of hockey, nurtured by the Ithaca Youth Hockey. He attended Ithaca schools until going away to St. Mark's School in Southboro, MA, where he excelled in hockey, lacrosse and football, graduating in 1991. He developed many special relationships with his coaches and mentors. Jason was a gifted athlete and was an All American in lacrosse. Upon graduation from St. Mark's, he received the coveted Fearing Prize for athletic excellence and also the invitation to play in the prestigious North/South Lacrosse Tournament. He then attended Colgate University, where he lettered as a goaltender on the men's hockey team and a midfielder on the lacrosse team, graduating in 1996. He was a graduate of Flight Safety School in Lakeland, FL, where he received training for his commercial pilot license. He was a graduate of New England School of Law, earning a Juris Doctorate, and Boston University earning a master's in tax law. Jason had a private law practice in New Bedford, MA, until shortly before his death. At the time of his death, he was pursuing his dream of becoming a club golf professional in Orlando, FL. Jason strove for excellence in everything that came before him, always reaching for perfection. He was loved dearly by his family and friends. He will be remembered for his kindness, compassion and integrity. An incredible and loving father, he was never happier than when he was with his children. Jason is survived by his parents; wife, Eve Jorge Gates, and three beloved children, Aidan Reeder, Asher Snow and Aislyn "Tiggy" Snow, all of South Dartmouth, MA; his sisters, Dr. Erin Gates of Cranston, RI, Ainsley (Brady) Nunley of Chicago, IL; his paternal grandmother, Helen Gates of Trumansburg; his aunts and uncles, Gail Hood of Oneida, James (Donalyn) Moore of Hopewell Junction, Bette (David) Minarski of Dryden, Brett (Denise) Moore of Canastota, Pam (Ray) Corriveau of Manchester, NH, Vanessa Fey of Trumansburg, and Dona Gates of Bolivar; mother-in-law, Barbara Thompson of South Dartmouth, MA; and his father-in-law, David Jorge of New Bedford, MA. He is also survived by his cousins, Sally Quist, Todd Hood, Miranda Orlowski, Jesse Moore, Vicky Pease, Daniel, Jonathan, Katie, James and Stephan Minarski, Elizabeth, Justin and Katherine Moore, Holli and Wendi Gates, Marc Childs and Shannon Austin, Matt and Joel Fey and Lauren Dublanica. Jason had many teammates and friends, many close like brothers, the two closest being his cousin, Dan Minarski, and his childhood friend, Bill Abel. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Clifford Gates, Forster and Ruth Moore; his uncles, Maurice Gates and Gary Hood, and his father-in-law, Richard Thompson. The family asks those wishing to make a contribution in Jason's memory to kindly consider St. Mark's School, 25 Marlborough Road, Southborough, MA 01772 and Ithaca Youth Hockey Association, PO Box 391, Ithaca, NY 14851. A celebration of Jason's life will be held on Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 402 N. Aurora St., Ithaca, NY, with Rev. Rebecca Dolch officiating. Reeder, Sally, Ainsley, and Erin,

Even though I knew of Jason's death, I could never work up the courage to give our say something about him to you because it always brought me down in tears. We all know what great pain it caused your family and we wish you our best wishes.

You know what they say though. Without pain, how could we know joy. Jason will always be in our hearts.

It was once said that it's not death that brings us the greatest loss in life, but all that dies inside of us. As life goes on, we hope that you will all find ways to celebrate the memory of your devoted son/brother. We know he would want you to live every day to the fullest and continue the celebration of his contagious love for life. May time speed your healing. You're in our thoughts and prayers.

I just became aware of Jason's passing
and was so saddened.I first knew Jason
when he set up his law practice in Bridgewater and as an older attorney
with a busy practice I had him assist
me with some of my business and real estate clients over the years.I was always impressed with his abilities and work ethic and enjoyed our conversatiions regarding our mutual
interests in athletics and flying.
I would like to express the sympathies of myself and my office staff to his family and friends.

Dear Gates Family,

I am very saddened to hear about your loss. I never had the opportunity to meet Jason in person but was connected with him through a group of fellow Colgate lacrosse alum. I was asking advice about practicing law in Massachusetts when I left the Marine Corps and was thinking about opening my own law practice in the Boston area. Without even knowing me he took the time to discuss various things from the law to our common interests of lacrosse and hockey. I was very suprised how giving of his time that day for someone he had never even met, but I greatly appreciated his advice and he helped me a great deal. I am sorry that I did not ever have the opportunity to meet him in person. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

December 16, 2009

I remember a childhood friend in Jason. He was easy to envy, had great speed and balance, a friend that could bend a lacrosse ball into a net when others could not. He called it his J-shot, I remember. He moved between many friends actually, Bill Abel, Meghan Concannon, Derrick Griffiths... he was well liked and well known---the kid that was always willing to sell some Hill Drug candy at Dewitt MS between periods. He was one of us, though he left for prep school he came back on holidays to revel in old stories and catch up on your own. He was warm, friendly and happy....that's what I remember most!

I am sorry for this loss and deeply saddened.

To the entire Gates family. Jason was one of the most fantastic people that we have ever had the privelage of meeting. His energy and enthusiasm will be greatly missed by all he came in contact with. He has installed memories in all of us from reading the line for a winning putt on the 18th green at crunch time. To relaxing and celebrating on the deck, smoking a cigar after the round is done, and usually won. He has touched us all, and while we are sadened at his passing, everyone he touched will remember him well. The lord has him and he is safe. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. May God keep you well and strong in these times and always.
