Mr. Waters was one of the kindest people I have ever met! He will be missed by many people. From the time I was a little girl I loved going to the Waters' house. They were so kind and giving to my parents in their time of need I wish had lived closer to repay their kindness. I will always have very fond memories of him and I feel lucky to have known him.

Mr. Waters was (and still is, no doubt) a good friend of mine. We shared the same birthday and exchanged cards; i remember him singing 'happy birthday to us.' It was always good to hear him share stories of his experience of American history. He was also quite knowledgeable on faith/theological matters and shared his Catholic magazines with. Mr. Waters was always cheerful and had a positive outlook on life; he will surely be missed.

Mr. Waters was such a wonderful man. Always with a smile on his face. We were fortunate enough to spend Thanksgiving with him. When he spoke, everyone listed, and we truly enjoyed those special times with him. To his daughter-in-law Maria, you have our deepest sympathies. Bernard is in a wonderful place, with his wife Julia and your Mike.

Bernie was an amazing person. I am very grateful to have known him, even if it was briefly. He had agreed to speak with me about his critical work with the United States' Civil Rights Laws, for the Oakview Citizen, but it did not work out. What a gentle soul and a great man. It is now our turn to carry on the good work he did. - Mike Miehl, Silver Spring MD

God Bless Mr. Waters. He was known as St. Bernie of Statside Drive. Mr. Waters was he kindest man and a true example of a good Christian. He was so good to everyone. I am certain he is reunited with his dear wife and son, in heaven. Rest in peace, Mr. Waters. With love,

With deepest sympathy from your distant relative in the UK. I believe Bernard was my father James Watters' cousin. My grandfather was James Watters from Sligo, Ireland. What a great story to come from the poverty of Ireland and to achieve so much.

Bernie, you were a great man, friend, neighbor, husband and father. Your intelligence was admirable and you were like a "rock" in the Oakview Community for 50+years! (Especially for everyone on Stateside & East Light Drives.
Thank you, Bernie, for baptizing my father, Rober Amberg, before he passed away almost 9 years ago.
They don't make many men as dignified, gentle and caring as Bernie any more.....he was an inspiration to us all! Rest in peace, Bernie. You will not be forgotten.

Our deepest sympathy to the family. I am a daughter in law of the the late Robert and Helen DeLauney . I only knew him by his church readings and leading the rosery at their funerals, for that I am grateful and has touched my life with his devotion of faith. He will be missed.

I am so sorry, I meant to say that I was holding your left hand on Jan. 6, 2011 at 12:02am. I was not holding your hand in 2010. You see if you were here you would have corrected me. I hope that you are smiling!

Bernie Waters, I salute you! You are a true hero! It was an honor and a privilege to be holding your left hand on Jan. 6, 2010 at 12:02am when God called you home. I have been wearing your watch since you went to heaven - it makes me feel better. I kept me word and secured your watch until you left the hospital. I will now hand it over to Maria on Saturday. I also gave her a nick name "The Rock" because she is so strong and amazing and showed everyone just how much she loved you be her caring ways and thoughtful acts! Thank you Bernie and I love you!
