Happy New Year Herb - RIP

To Pamela, Yes of course I remember you.
To Herb, I think of you each and everyday and it is hard for me to get used to the concept that you are gone. I unfortunately did not meet your kids like you met my youngest 2. In fact I never knew you were a professional boxer until you showed me your tapes. I just now wish we had not drifted apart for so long then I would have more memories to reflect on......
please keep resting in peace, Herb
Your friend as always, John Geoghegan

Hey Herbie! Think about you quite a bit in these days and it is good to see how much you touched many lives through the years. I am also happy that we were able to reconnect after 30 years of no contact. I am still surprised that you had a professional boxing career that I did not know about or I would have been at some of the fights as well. It was nice to come over and see some of the game films you had from the wild world of sports back in your heyday- well take care up there and see you when it is my turn....

Damn Herb! I didn't know you were gone! I was trying to make my semi annual call to you just to catch up and thank you again for getting me into boxing and cleaning up my life. Someone else had your number. I also want you to know your advice was great. You retired from boxing and suggested I not turn professional. You said I had the best jab and great foot work, but a better mind. It was a good choice and good advice. I enjoyed sparring with you. And I became a white collar professional. I never lost my love for the sport you introduced me to. I remember you and i having fun throwing people into Chris Van Herpes pool at a party back in '74 I didn't know who you were, but one of us was going in. I came out wet. I am glad we were friends, glad to have seen your fights, glad to have been in the gym with you. The ring in the sky awaits.
Thank you,

Yes it has been a year and Herbie you are still here in our hearts. I apologize for calling you Herbie but that is the name I knew you by many years ago, rest easy my friend the struggle of life is but a memory for you in your new existence. I think about you everytime I work out and all the fun we had working out in my parents garage in Potomac while helping ourselves to the beer machine afterwards, I am forever sorry to have missed your boxing career and your dedication, determination and stick-to-it-ness to the sport and to your family. I also missed your family years and you missed mine. I am glad that you were able to finally meet my children and sorry to not have met yours. Rest in Peace my good friend. I have a great photo of I cannot find it, so long ago......

Dear Herb and Muriel
A new year is approaching and one without you.... I am deeply saddened and everytime I hear Hendrix and/or recently catalogued my albums I think of you Herb and your Mom (Muriel) coming home at 11:00 pm to give us the inspiration of the day as we were headed home. Take care up there- as always

To Herb's family and loved ones, please accept the belated but no-less heartfelt condolences of my Mom (Ernie) and I.  Years ago my Mom and I met Herb, based on a review I read from one of his client's--no doubt a friend, and we had been entertained by his stories and well served by his commitment to excellent work.  I regret that I'll not hear his voice or watch him swing a hammer again.  For me, the take away lesson is to make more of an effort to keep in touch as life and light are fleeting.   ...Herb, I hope heaven has a cold beer and a guitar.  Rest in peace.

To the family of Herb Wilens, Please accept the belated but no less heart felt condolences from my Mom(Ernie) and I. We first met Herb several years ago (after reading a review posted by one of his customers (no doubt a friend). In the intervening years and we had been entertained by Herb's stories and well served by his commitment to excellent work. ...I regret not picking up the phone sooner. For me, the take away lesson is keep in touch as life and light is fleeting. ...I hope heaven has an electric guitar and a cold beer. Rest in peace Herb.

Dear Ms. O'Brien and the entire Wilens family,
Dennis and I send our condolences on Herb's death this year. We knew him as a worker and a talker as he mended parts of our home in Oakton, and thanks to you our shiny white garage stands as sort of a legacy to Herb's determination to see the job through. As few opportunities as I had to meet with Herb, I find myself missing him I can only imagine how many people are feeling the same way, joining their tears with yours. We wish you all peace through this time. Leslie Bowen and Dennis Bley

There is a day that goes by I do not think of Herb. He was just a very out going and always wanted to help in any way he could. there was a time with his brother, David, Ali, and me were were having a great time in the garage at christmas just laughing and laughing. Herb told his brother to take off his shoes before coming into the house. Doug said no Herb I am not taking off my shoes. Well You had to have been there as his shoes did come off and there was peace again. But it was David who messed up the rug not Doug,, I will miss you you very much my friend,, Sean

Dear Friends and Family of Herb Wilens;

I have decided to extend this guest log by one year so at various times you and myself can post rememberences to Herb. As I posted on Facebook I think of Herb every day. Some of those days I am going to be posting some of my fondest and best memories of Herb as I knew him many years ago. Everyone else that knew Herb is invited to do so as well. I regret I was unable to make the funeral I have some health issues as well and mornings are especially hard for me to get organized. I feel this is the next best thing.
When Herb and I were kids we shared a lot and I loved my friend, of which never stops or diminishes. Herb worked with me in the late 70's when he took up boxing and married and I moved to VA. in 1981 we drifted apart. We did reconnect in 2009 for a brief period and it was nice. He met my children and we had talked of me meeting his of which time did not allow for us. I never saw Herb fight or knew he had become a professional fighter until after he had retired. He did show me some of his fight films and I was proud of him for being courageous and being successful.
At this time I will leave it at that- my Hopes and Prayers to all that Herb left behind and that I never met- may Herb Rest in Peace.....

To the Wilens family, Matt and I were very sad to hear about Herb. He was so kindhearted and I never saw him without a smile on his face. He was always welcoming everyone into his home and treated me like family. He loved his kids so much. We are praying for all of you. Luv, Ruth and Matt Romack

Herb was the best man in our wedding. I remember all of the great times we had and Herb's smile especially when he was driving around in his red corvette or doing his "roadwork" getting ready for a boxing match. Our sympathies to his family.

I only remember fun times with Herbie in the mid 70's . In his basement with Doug and other people at night. He was always even tempered and smiling. I remember Herbie putting boxing gloves on me and challenge his brother Doug With Lee Samuels as his coach. We were laughing so hard I think I did get a punch on Doug .
We all came from Heaven and we are all going back to Heaven....see you later Herbie.

Herb was a friend from the old school days. I was sorry to hear that he lost his battle with cancer. I bet he is still working out and sparring with the best of them up above ~ God Bless.

Herb was my friend and my contractor. There isn't a room in my house that Herb has not worked in and made beautiful. He built me the most wonderful kitchen. I will miss our talks at the kitchen table, about the job, my kids, his kids, Beverly, whom he clearly adored. He was a wonderful man. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

I am a friend from the Winston Churchill days. Recently my mom, sister and I saw Herby at another sad occasion-the funeral of a mutual friend in Nov. 2011.
We are so sorry for your loss.
I will remember his smile and how working out and training were important aspects of his life.
Though I only knew his 1 son, Benjamin I know he was very proud to be his dad.I can only imagine he felt the same way about his other children too.
