JAMES DUNCAN Obituary

DUNCAN JAMES MICHAEL DUNCAN, M.D. James Michael "Mike" Duncan died unexpectedly on Monday, May 28, 2012. He was born in Wichita, Kansas on February 5, 1952. He received a degree in nuclear engineering from Kansas State University in 1974 and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the School of Medicine at the University of Kansas in 1977. Mike was a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and was certified in internal medicine, critical care and pulmonary disease. Mike began his career as a physician in the United States Navy in Portsmouth, Virginia from 1977 to 1985, before starting in private medical practice for 13 years. Mike served as Deputy Chief Medical Officer of the Space Life Sciences Directorate at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. He began his work with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) when he joined Wyle Laboratories in 1999 to provide medical coverage to astronauts in training in Star City, Russia. He became a flight surgeon for NASA in 2000 and participated in the Space Shuttle Program as Deputy Crew Surgeon for STS-104 and STS-108 before being named Lead Crew Surgeon for Expedition 6 to the International Space Station. He served as Manager of Medical Operations for NASA from 2002 to 2004, and as Chief of Space Medicine from 2004 to 2009. He became Deputy Chief Medical Officer in 2009. During his tenure at NASA, he received numerous awards, such as the Johnson Space Center Superior Achievement Award and the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal. Mike led the NASA team that traveled to Chile in September 2010 in support of the rescue of the 33 trapped miners. For their efforts, they were awarded the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal and the 2011 Samuel J. Heyman, Service to America, National Security and International Affairs Medal. The Service to America Medals program recognizes the exceptional work of unsung heroes, who are part of the federal workforce. In 2010, he was elected by his peers as a full member of the International Academy of Astronautics. He was also a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Senior Aviation Medical Examiner, a Fellow in the American College of Chest Physicians and an instrument-rated private pilot. At the time of his death, Mike served as the Chief Medical Officer at the National Transportation Safety Board. Mike enjoyed many outside activities, traveling, cooking and flying. Mrs. Duncan,
So sorry to hear of the loss of Dr. Mike Duncan. I worked with him at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville & Henry County in Virginia for the few years we were blessed to have him as Chief of Pulmonology. He had a great passion for medicine and doing the "right thing" for his patients. I will always remember what he taught me about putting the patient first.

The world has lost a truly great man.

Candy,
I am not sure if you remember me--I just found out. I am at a loss for words. The last time I spoke with Dr. Duncan he told me about you going to DC and you both being there. He was so very kind to me when he was in Martinsville. I would like to thank you for sharing your husband with the rest of us.

Candy - I'm at a loss of words to convey the news of Mike's passing brought upon me. For in the years since I had last seen Mike & you, I often thought of you both as pursuing a life of service to our country.

Mike's friendship & guidance in sports "medicine" were greatly appreciated. May you find solace in knowing Mike's lifetime of achievements has touched so many others.

Candy,

Such a loss, of a man we at AHS knew would accomplish great things. My heart goes out to you and your family. May all your wonderful memories of Mike sustain you through this difficult time.

Candy, When Mike and I were assigned to do the OIIR Christmas party I didn't know your husband well. Then we started talking about empanadas. We tried each type of Julia's Empanadas sharing them with our office mates and choosing our favorites for the party. It was an excellent lunch. We were bonded in the effort to complete the office initiation task.

Mike was a great and kind person. I am so sorry for your lose.

Candy, I am so sorry to hear the news of Mike's death. John and I were so delighted to meet him and looked forward to spending time with you both. I feel privileged that he joined us for dinner in Arlington and that I got to know him just a bit...and to quickly become aware of just what major contributions he has made to his Nation and to so many individuals. Please know that there are many of us who surround you with affection.

Candy, I was shocked to hear about Mike's sudden death. Our prayers and thoughts are with you, your family and the many, many friends both of you have. I was always in awe of just how smart he was in school, never saw anyone who seemed to love to learn as much as he did. He has a wonderful sense of humor, too. In reading his obituary, I see he had accomplished so many things that lots of us only dream of. God Bless you, Candy and may He comfort you during this time.

To the family of Dr Duncan,
We at the National Museum of Natural History recently had Dr Duncan participate as a speaker for our series on emergency management with the Chilean Miners. We were very excited Dr Duncan could attend the seminar and speak of his experience. He added a very personal note about being in Chile helping so many and working with an extraordinary team. We could tell by his passion that he was a very special man and excellent physician.
We are grieved to hear of his passing. The education staff and volunteers who worked on the Chilean exhibit want to send all of you our sympathy and condolences. Very sincerely,
Margery Gordon

Candy, My heart goes out to you and your family. I always felt privileged to have been able to call Mike a friend. I remember the many rounds of golf we played in High School and during our semester breaks. Once even with snow on the ground at the Wichita State course. Our flying together at Augusta right after he got his license, and splitting the gas money. The last time I saw him was several years ago in Richmond when I was there on business and we went out to dinner and talked of our many good times together and you and your career. He was very proud of you. Mike was truly a wonderful guy. Sharon and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Mrs. Duncan,

I am so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure and privilege of working with Dr. Duncan at NASA Headquarters and will never forget him. I loved stopping by his office to learn from him and talk about things outside of the office, like sports and travel. He had a real passion for life and was so knowledgeable on such a broad range of topics, but carried himself humbly. I'll never forget his booming laugh that would brighten my day. Mike was such a kind and compassionate man, with a good heart. My wife recently finished her medical residency and Dr. D would always ask about how she was doing and offer words of wisdom and support. When I started in his office at HQ, he was so welcoming and made me feel very comfortable. I was sad when he left NASA, but happy for him about his new position at the NTSB. My wife and I really enjoyed his talk at the Smithsonian when he was honored for his part in rescuing the 33 Chilean miners. True to form, Dr. D insisted on giving the credit to the Chileans. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to meet and become friends with Dr. Duncan. I will never forget him. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,
Kevin Conole

Candy,
You, Mike and your family are very much in my thoughts and prayers. For many of us, the last time we saw Mike was a lifetime ago at our high school graduation. It's obvious that over the years he has touched many lives in a very positive way. Not surprising, as he was always a very kind person. May the good memories of your years together bring you peace and the love of family and friends give you strength. My deepest sympathy,

Mrs. Duncan, as a co-worker, I always met Mike in the hallways with a warm smile and a hello. One of the most interesting meetings I've sat in was hearing him speak on his experiences in the rescue of the Chilean miners – thinking that was thoughtful of him to take the time and share this with the staff. Speaking of thoughtful, to assist with the Holiday party and also meet me at the elevator and say it was his last day at NASA. Although we don't always understand the whys, please be encouraged that God loves you and understands your pain right now. He's always only a prayer away. Peace, Hope, & Joy 2U through this time of grief.

I had the privilege working with Mike. I remember when he first arrived in DC that he was so happy to be nearer to Candy…finally, but somehow he found himself working with me. I would tell my kids about him and what he had accomplished and what a privilege it was to work with “my Chilean rock star”. I find working in government in DC a bit like Sisyphus pushing the rock up the mountain…with Mike as a partner, we made great progress on a number of difficult tasks. We also enjoyed walks and talks and dinners and ballgames and birthdays and anniversaries and even the plane. When I think of Mike, I will remember that after years of focusing my life on being a father of 4 and serving my country…Mike was teaching me to be a friend.
I was lucky to have the very best as a teacher.
