Juan was a staunch friend, a great surgeon and a compassionate educator. More than anyone we know, because he lived life to the hilt, we think that he would agree with Tennyson.
"Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell
When I embark."
It's going to be very hard to live in a world that does not include Juan d'Avis. Jack and Joann Major

Juan was part of our family with a different last name. He made every event a blast, spoke at my wedding, helped save my mother's life and was of the funniest, coolest most genuine guys ever. If he saw someone standing alone at a party he'd go out of his way to make them feel welcome. He had an amazing laugh and boundless energy.
We can't think of the world without him in it but know he continues in a different form. Thanks for gracing us with your presence and Godspeed, Dr. D'Avis. Carolyn, we're thinking of you and sending our love.

I did not know Dr. D'Avis professionally, but as a neighbor. Growing up across the street, I often experienced his warmth, laughter and general joy for life first-hand. As an adult, I was fortunate enough to be his neighbor again. This time around, I was able to share him with my own family. His joy at meeting my son and their interactions are etched in our memories. I offer our deepest sympathies to all his family.

Dr. d'Avis was my Residency Program Director when I first came to Walter Reed in the 1980's. He was the quintessential Surgeon and taught us all to always think of and do the right thing, for the Patient. His unique combination of unbounded energy, marvelous quotes, and true love for people working for him will never be equaled. Not a day goes by in my surgical career that I don't think of him and his influence on my professional life and accomplishments. Thank you, Dr. d'Avis, for everything. Rest In Peace. Carolyn and Family, thank you for sharing him with us and may his legacy and the friends he made along the way, provide a measure of solace at this difficult time.

I am truly saddened that we have lost one of the most passionate and devoted supporters and leaders of military medicine. I first met Dr. D'Avis as a medical student when he was Chief of Surgery at Walter Reed and have worked closely with him while a residency director. Dr. D'Avis gave freely of his precious time to teach and mentor many physicians including my trainees and myself. Each year Dr. D'Avis would prepare and conduct a teaching station on the facial nerve dissection for our dermatology residency anatomy class held at USUHS. He was an inspiring and enthusiastic teacher whose love for mentoring residents was obvious. My condolences to Mrs. D'Avis and the family. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
