James Doherty, Jr.
August 24, 2012
My Dad, James Doherty, met Ken at the AFL-CIO and worked with him and was his friend for many years. Ken and Charlotte were good friends with my folks, Jim and Joan, and they were often guests in our home. My six brothers and sisters and I often heard Jim and Joan speak of both Kenny and Charlotte with the greatest respect and affection. If anyone has information on a memorial service, I know that Jim and Joan would very much like to come and pay their respects, I can be reached at [email protected].

Ken Young was a great trade unionist who represented the best of the labor movement. He was the leader of labor's support for Civil Rights, Education, Childcare and Economic Justice Legislation as well as Judicial Appointments and so much more. Ken found allies for labor's program by using labor's legislative strength on behalf of social justice legislation not usually thought of as labor's issues. Ken made being a labor lobbyist an honor, he was the best there ever was, to say he will be missed doesn't express the scope of his work and influence.

Ken Young was one of the best and will be sorely missed. He served in the Insurance Workers Union in various positions in the 50s, moved to the Industrial Union Dept. at the AFL-CIO shortly after the merger, was an outstanding lobbyist for workers and served as Asst. Director and then Director of the Legislative Dept. under George Meany, was Executive Assistant to AFL-CIO President Lane Kirkland (and occasionally played the washboard when Lane entertained us with his harmonica). His work behind the scenes with the Polish union Solidarnosc is legend. Ken was one of the most dedicated, hard-working and decent individuals I ever had the privilege of working with. Ken, millions of workers didn't know you but benefited from your untiring devotion to their cause.
