My Dad, James Doherty, met Ken at the AFL-CIO and worked with him and was his friend for many years. Ken and Charlotte were good friends with my folks, Jim and Joan, and they were often guests in our home. My six brothers and sisters and I often heard Jim and Joan speak of both Kenny and Charlotte with the greatest respect and affection. Ken Young was a great trade unionist who represented the best of the labor movement. He was the leader of labor's support for Civil Rights, Education, Childcare and Economic Justice Legislation as well as Judicial Appointments and so much more. Ken found allies for labor's program by using labor's legislative strength on behalf of social justice legislation not usually thought of as labor's issues. Ken Young was one of the best and will be sorely missed. He served in the Insurance Workers Union in various positions in the 50s, moved to the Industrial Union Dept. at the AFL-CIO shortly after the merger, was an outstanding lobbyist for workers and served as Asst. Director and then Director of the Legislative Dept. under George Meany, was Executive Assistant to AFL-CIO President Lane Kirkland (and occasionally played the washboard when Lane entertained us with his harmonica).
