I remember Dr. Bender from when I was very young, about 4 years old, and how he helped me through a very bad sickness and cared for me for many years as I grew to an adult. He was always my "favorite" doctor. His concern and care were genuine and he always made me feel better. Thank God for such a dedicated and caring person who shared his talents and kindness with so many. May you rest in the light of God's kingdom always.

There was a father who was dealing with a dying son. His son looked to him and asked the the question he dreaded. "Dad I know I'm dying but what is it like to die?" The father thought for a moment and replied: "Do you remember when you fell asleep on the sofa and woke up the next day safely tucked in your bed? Well, how did you get there? When you fell asleep your heavenly Father came and carried you in His arms and safely tucked you into bed. When you woke up you found yourself in a place where there is love all around and your body is without pain or suffering. That is what dying is like. Now rest with this knowledge and know that one is safe forever in God's presence."

I enjoyed being with Dr. Bender on the few occsions that we met, distance being the barrier to more frequent meetings. I fondly remember him as a very erudite and knowledgeable person. I wonder how, with the demands of a busy medical practice, he
found the time to gain this additional knowledge. It was pleasure to be with him, something that money could not buy. It is a great loss to the family and I will pray that the good Lord will help you in your travail. May God accept him in his embrace and let his perpetual light shine upon him.

To Paul, Christine & the Bender family,
I know this is a difficult time for all of you. But don't forget to smile and laugh, and think of all the joy, pleasure and humour your father brought to all of you throughout his long, full and zestful life. Take comfort in knowing that his values, his life lessons, and his warmth and compassion for others, particularly his for family, friends and patients, will live on through you. One of the best ways to honour his memory and keep him in your heart, is to share the priceless gifts he gave you with those you love and care for.
While I only met Doc Bender on a few momentous and joyful family occasions, he always welcomed me warmly, with kindness, open arms, and a big smile! His gregarious personality, his generous spirit and most importantly, his genuine interest in the well being of others, are what touched me most.
Paul, I experience your Dad through your joy of life and closeness to nature, feel your Dad through your kind and generous heart, see your Dad in your broad, warm smile, and hear your Dad in your boisterous, infectious laugh! He does indeed live on.
Love, Doug

“The unconditional fence”
Where fences are limits, Dr. Bender made them a place of joy, happiness and gladness. He broke the barrier of division with his kindness and concern and brought the word neighbor to a higher standard. This simple partition became a meeting place to celebrate the beauty of the day and that of the seasons, a place of reassurances after hurricanes, blizzards, tornados and earthquake. This fence became the hand that held a ‘life-line' of electrical wires for the days without electricity due to the storms of that year. I call it the unconditional fence.
For many years, more than a decade, this partition became a weekly focal point for me and my handful of hounds and sporting dogs. I would find a bag hanging on the fence with t-bones and other delights for my K-9 family. Critters that Dr. Bender would always bring up and point to each and say: “that's a beautiful dog”. Surely, my dogs would always let me know when Dr. Bender was outdoors and eager to go outdoors and say hello to a friend who would kindly reach over the fence to pet each in an unconditional form.
Dr. Bender's love and knowledge for nature and animals are beyond volumes of book. His daylily walks to contemplate his flowers and backyard residence, and feed his endless birds is a picture that I will never forget.
Your wonderful spirit is on the other side of life, a fence we will one day come to and definitely will need to break the obstacle of life and death. I know that you will reach out your hand once again with a life-line to all of us. Your love, kindness and concerns to humanity, life and nature are non-limited, now more than ever.
Thank you Dr. Paul Bender for living and sharing the meaning of “the unconditional fence”.
All my love and blessings to the Bender family

Dr. Bender will be missed-- he was such a wonderful person and always brought a smile to my face when I would see him. He and the family have a very special place in my heart. My prayers and thoughts are with everyone. When I first heard the news my first thought was that Elaine was there welcoming him to his new everlasting home of joy, peace, and comfort.

My most sincere condolence to the family.
I had the pleasure to work with Paul for many years at Providence Hospital. Together, we participated in the leadership of the Panamerican Medical Society of Washington, DC. His enthusiasm and dedication were most admirable. May he rest in peace.

I will never say goodbye to you my Father
because I know this is not the end for us to see each other.
You will only be going to a place where there's no pain nor suffering.
I am happy for you, for you will be with God.
For now we need to go in separate ways.
I remember how your arms hold me and give me strength.
You were always there to listen, love, and defend me in everything.
You were my very best friend.
In my triumphs you were always proud.
I'm very grateful and proud to call you my dad.
Here deep inside my heart you'll always be.
I would give up everything I have just to hug you one more time.
I remember the last time I held your hand and how you looked at me in the eyes.
If only I could turn back the time I would have never let you go.
I felt the world stop and my heart stop beating when I was told you were gone…
How I wish I was only dreaming.
Just like the rain, tears fell down from my eyes, I couldn't speak for awhile.
Thank you Dad….
For always understanding, listening, caring, and loving me your whole life.
The greatest gift God gave me was YOU…….. my Dad…
It's difficult to let you go but I must…
I must return the gift God gave me…
