Roy Patmalnee Obituary

PATMALNEE ROY FRANCIS PATMALNEE Born in Boston, Massachusetts on August 31, 1936; died August 24, 2010 of Parkinson''s Disease. His battle with the disease was heroic. He was the son of Robert and Francesca Berardinella Patmalnee. He was accomplished in his desire to teach the young and to play baseball. Cape Cod''s baseball fields were his playgrounds. His real love was literature; poetry was his way of intrusion of what life offered. He moved to the Washington, DC area after graduating from Curry''s College in Massachusetts. He continued his education at the University of Maryland earning a Master''s degree in English. He was hired in 1965 at Wheaton High School''s English Department. While there, he taught seniors how to love the beauty of the English language. He directed classroom plays encouraging his students to beyond the written word and enter the realm of imagery and imagination. He also coached the boys weight lifting crew which he had done while at Curry''s. After leaving Wheaton High, he took a year to write a novel which is published by Amazon books. Returning to teaching, he was hired at Sligo Middle School, where he coached the baseball team for many years, as well as put on school plays. A favorite quote of his was from Ralph Waldo Emerson''s "Self Reliance"..."a foolish consistency is the hob-goblin of little minds." Remember him thus: ''Give all to love, obey thy heart; friends, kindred days; estates, good fame, plans, credits and the Muse-Nothing Refuse!'' Friends may call at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard, West, Silver Spring, MD, (Valet Parking), Monday, August 30, 2010 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Interment private. www.COLLINSFUNERALHOME.com

He was my English teacher at Sligo in the late 90s. Wonderful guy. I have vivid memories to this day of him reading his stories to the class. He inspired me to write and he would often read the stories I shared with him. I only have a very small handful of teachers I admire, and Mr. Patmalnee is one of them.

Mr. Patmalnee changed my life for the better in many ways. I had him for English in 11th and 12th grade at Wheaton HS. It was the only class I looked forward to each day. More important to me than his grammar and writing lessons were the stories he told us on a regular basis. He instilled in me a lifelong love of travel with stories of falling in love in a gypsy camp in Bavaria, a moose attacking the VW bug that he was riding in, and many more. He was an early role model for a confused adolescent. He was special!

I was lucky enough to have him as an English teacher at Sligo middle school. He would share bits of whatever story he was writing with the class. I never forgot him and what a wonderful person he was. He is still missed.

I was lucky to have Mr. Patmalnee for two years, my 10th and 11th at Wheaton High School. I've earned two graduate degrees since then and Roy was by far my greatest influence. I googled him today because I wanted to let him know how much his travel stories meant to me in my formative years. I was sorry to see that he had passed but hope my comments may mean something to his family.
I learned little grammer in Roy's class but was introduced to the larger world by his fascinating travel stories. He awakened a wanderlust in me that has yet to be quenched. Stories like his night with the gypsies, the volkswagen and the moose, and so many more always made his class everyone's favorite. I never knew if all of his adventures were fact or fiction. But I didn't care, they were inspiring none the less. Thanks Roy, sorry I didn't tell you in person how special you were!

I had Mr. Patmalnee as an English teacher in the 11th grade at Wheaton High School in
Wheaton, MD back in 1972. He had a very interesting class, one that has stood out w/ his unusual progressive teaching style. Always remember his wiiide grin, smiling. Seemed to have loved what he was doing. J.Andrea (Abelmann)Kudel

Roy was a dear friend who loved to entertain us, his Sligo compatriots, with zany retelling of his 'heroic' adventures. I fondly remember the night we stayed up late while he patiently instructed me in the intricacies of March Madness, the final 4. I will miss his laughter, his keen mind, and the faithful warmth of his friendship.

Roy has been a good friend for 50 years, from our days at Curry College right up to the present. We argued about politics, and shared the love of a good book and a laugh over the silly side of life. He cared a lot for our family and children, and, though he never met them, even thought about the grandchildren. And whenever we needed him, he would be there. He will be missed.

How hard to say goodbye to our friend, teacher, writer, performer. We are revisiting many warm memories of teaching together, living our lives side by side for many wonderful years, and sharing "hover" dinners-Roy always threatened to make spaghetti. When Maureen, Annie, Frank and Roy performed their poetry readings it was as if they became the poems themselves. Sweetest memories. Love,
