Virginia Wilcoxson Obituary

Wilcoxson, Virginia Urbani 04/15/1914 ~ 02/07/2014 SAN DIEGO -- Virginia Urbani Wilcoxson, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2014, nine weeks shy of her 100th birthday, surrounded by her loving family. Scholar, teacher, businesswoman, world traveler, wife, mother, grandmother and volunteer, she was truly a renaissance woman. Born of immigrant Italian parents at Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest, Virginia enjoyed growing up in the sleepy Navy town of San Diego, graduating from San Diego High School's Class of 1932. Intent on a career teaching languages, she studied French, Spanish and Portuguese, adding to her already fluent English and Italian. Immediately upon receiving her BA at San Diego State in 1936, she was hired to teach French and Spanish at Hoover High School. Ten years later, she took a sabbatical to earn a Master's Degree at UC Berkeley and perhaps meet that 'someone special' and raise a family. Virginia hosted many French dinners at Berkeley's International House and it was at one of these that she met her future husband, Walter Wilcoxson. He was a student at the University and the two hit it off but it was his long distance love letters in French that won her heart. In 1948 they were married by then Bishop Charles Francis Buddy at St. Joseph's Cathedral in downtown San Diego. They settled in Mission Hills in 1956. During the nearly 60 years of marriage that followed, they raised three children, Virginia taught full time, invested in real estate and cared for her elderly parents. In 1979, she retired from San Diego Unified ending a 40 year career as an inspirational educator at Hoover, Crawford and Point Loma High Schools. Fulfilling her dream of traveling, in 1980, she and Walter began visiting far-flung areas of the world including Europe, Australia, Russia, Turkey and Portugal. A deeply religious woman and devout Catholic, their travels included pilgrimages to Fatima, Medugorje and Lourdes. At the age of 96 she went to Italy with her daughter to reconnect with relatives in Umbria. Virginia also found time to dedicate many years of volunteer service at UCSD Medical Center acting as an admitting interpreter in the maternity ward. In later years, she became a beloved fixture in the community of Mission Hills, walking the streets near the family home always with a smile and kind word to all who crossed her path. Her ability to reach out to people of all ages and walk of life was one of her special qualities. Friends, children and grandchildren will always cherish her generosity of spirit, business acumen, strength of character and boundless zest for life. Predeceased in death by her beloved Walter, she is survived by her children, Tony Wilcoxson (Janet), Anna Wilcoxson (Duncan Schute), and Tess Nelson (Mark) and grandchildren, Christian Kirklighter, Eric, Lauren and Maxwell Nelson. Services are planned for Friday, February 14, 2014, at St. Vincent DePaul in Mission Hills (4080 Hawk St.). Rosary at 10:30 a.m. and Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Holy Cross Mausoleum immediately following.

I was a student in Madame Wilcoxson's French class in my junior and senior years at Crawford High. I became a lifelong francophile and use many of the expressions she taught me on a daily basis. I used one the other day - avoir les hoquets - and thought immediately of her. She used to say, "Ce n'est pas OK d'avoir les hoquets." So true! I will never forget her!

I am eternally grateful for having had Mrs. Wilcoxson as my second year Spanish teacher during my sophomore year at Crawford High School in 1962-1963. She gave me the confidence and skills I needed. She introduced me to new worlds. She really cared for her students.

Mrs. Wilcoxson was my French teacher at Crawford in the late from 1959-1962. I still have a mimeographed copy of the "petite causeries", Sister Sourire's songs, and my Cassell's French Dictionary. The very first thing she told us was that we were not allowed to speak anything other than French in the classroom - it was first-year French! After the deafening silence and then some agitated muttering she taught us how to say "est-ce-que je puis parler en Anglais?" What a great lady - she has never been forgotten!

Though I had four years of French in high school and college, the year with Madame Wilcoxson at Crawford in 196-62 was, without question, the most valuable. She was so kind, though demanding. There were high expectations but an equal amount of support. What a role model for teachers.

We were neighbors for many years in Canyonwoods San Diego. It was always a pleasure to see the Wilcoxsons, and when visitors were there from Germany Mrs. Virginia always spoke German to them. We were priviledged to know her. Witlh love to the family george and Katharina Farrand

I was Madame Wilcoxson's French student for my 3rd through 5th years of French at Crawford High School. While I ultimately majored in the biological sciences, she was one of my most admired teachers. She was kind and an excellent teacher. I feel I not only became fluent in French, but came to appreciate French literature and culture because of her. She had high expectations but made everyday in French fun and exciting. I never realized what a full life she had outside of the classroom as well. I have thought of her many times throughout the years.
Here's to a life well-lived, and to a very giving and loved human being. Merci, Madame Wilcoxson!

Not only did I attend and graduate from Crawford High....Mrs. Wilcoxson and my late father were both graduated San Diego High, class of 1932, I too was born at the 'old' Mercy Hospital. May her memory serve as a blessing.

I will always cherish Virginia's warm smile and helping hands during intermission of Anna's ballet recitals. Virginia sometimes sat in and watched us practiced before the big day. She impacted my life with small acts of kindness that I will always remember. My love and prayers go to the Wilcoxon family

Condolences to your family. I can't name all of my high school teachers, but Mrs. Wilcoxon is unforgettable. I enjoyed taking her French classes at Crawford High School in the 60's. She was a wonderful teacher, always with a smile.

My name is Charlotte Bourda Kutzner and I was a student in your mom's English class at Crawford High School (1967). I have many fond memories of her class, but the one that stands out is how she helped me improve my writing skills. What I learned helped me immensely in college and in my career as a teacher.

Her ability to connect with students also stands out in my memory. On one homework assignment I copied from my boyfriend's worksheet. She immediately caught what I had done, but instead of accusing me, she assumed it was my boyfriend who was at fault. As she was reprimanding my boyfriend, I confessed that I had been the one copying. Instead of coming down hard on me, like she could have done, she lectured me and then sent me on my way. Your mom knew I was a good kid, and tailored my punishment appropriately. That's what good teachers do!

My only regret is that I was never able to tell her how much she influenced me in my career choice and my connection with students.

With sincerest sympathy,
Charlotte
