Donald Wyche Obituary

Wyche, Donald W. Chelsea, Michigan Age 77, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, while holding Charlotte's hand. He was born June 1, 1938 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Harry and Ruth (Binney) Wyche. Don graduated from Lapeer High School in 1956. He attended the University of Michigan and also Bemidji State University in Minnesota during the late 1950's and early 1960's, where he played tuba in the marching band and studied math. Don was a computer consultant working for the Astronomy Department at the University of Michigan, for Interface Systems, Inc, for GM, and mainly for ADP. Don was a sailor, bridge player and wine aficionado, with a wine cellar that was both envied by and shared with friends. He was a fine host and a very social man. In the 1970's and 80's Don sang in the U of M Choral Union and, more recently, in the Silver Maples Choir. Don loved to travel; he and Charlotte traveled the world and especially enjoyed Italy. To the astonishment of friends and family Don and Charlotte were married on April 14, 1991. Other survivors include Charlotte's sons, Christopher (Michelle) Lawrence of Howell, Adam (Tracy) Lawrence of Riverside, CA; two sisters, Lois deLeon of Chelsea, Marge (Galen) Gockel of Oak Park, IL; a brother, Jim (Barbara) Wyche of Kitchener, ON; four grandchildren he thought of as his own, Adian, Christopher Jr, Nicholas, and Abbie Jean; and many beloved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. A celebration of Don's life is being planned for early June and information can be found at www.colefuneralchapel.com. Memorial contributions may be made in Don's honor to Food Gathers of Ann Arbor.

We are thinking of you today, Charlotte, on this anniversary of Don's passing. We have fond memories of our times together and the delicious and plentiful wine with our delicious dinner with you and Don when we moved to Ann Arbor for two years in the early 1990s.

My condolences. I got to know Don at the UMSC in the late seventies when I came to Ann Arbor area from Germany. I remember him as a great sailing teacher and instructor.

Sorry to hear about the loss. I met Don in the U of M sailing club and shared many good times in and out of sailboats back in the early 1960's. Also enjoyed visiting with him at the "armchair" regatta in Ann Arbor last summer.

I had known Don for almost 50 years. He gave (and passed) me on both my helmsman and skipper tests at the UMSC. He was always helpful, friendly and oh boy, that infectious laugh!! I once went to the thumb to his family cottage for a 470 sailing weekend, and that was a terrific experience. I also attended a charity dinner at your home for the benefit of the Food Gatherers, and that was truly amazing. We will all miss Don, the extrovert and good friend.

I met Don at Interface Systems in 1968. We were the best of friends for almost 50 years. We shared interests in food -- particularly asian food -- wine, classical music and science fiction. I have known no one who was better natured or was more fun to be with. He will be very much missed, not only by me and his survivors and other friends, but by the whole community because he did much good work among us.

Clay and I got to know Don through Barb and Henry Griffin and their wine group--The Gallivanters. We loved our times together traveling, cooking, and sharing great wine. We got to enjoy Cortona Italy, Charlottesville VA, Glen Arbor and Harbor Springs MI and Paso Robles CA with Don and Charlotte over the last 8 years. We'll always treasure memories of Don's smile and laugh, his sense of adventure, and his generosity. Our thoughts are with Charlotte and family in the days ahead. We will really miss Don!

I worked with Don at ADP and got to know him much better by tasting wine with him more recently. He was always cheerful and a gentleman and will be missed very much. Don, Charlotte and their family are in my thoughts and in my prayers.

I always found Don to be one if the kindest people I knew. Over the many years I saw Don at our weekly Wednesday night wine get together, he always had a wonderfully positive attitude about everybody and everything. I enjoyed hearing about his family cruises with Windjammer in the Caribbean. He was so generous and all could tell how much he loved his family. He would also talk about how lucky he was to find Charlotte, another person whom all enjoyed being around. I will miss seeing Don and that twinkle he always had in his eye

Don and I were students together in the UoM Science Engineering Program. We were also Finn sailors and traveled together to participate in the 1967 pre-Olympic Regatta in Mexico. Don always had a good sense of fun and humor.

A smile, a laugh and a vigorous hand shake.
He accepted all people. All people accepted him. He was always positive and peaceful.
Whether he was your husband, brother, son, uncle, grandfather or the guy down the row at Michigan Stadium, he was the consummate gentleman and a perfect example of kindness. He was Don.

We will remember Don as the special wine connoisseur from the fantastic dinners that we shared with you and Don in the early '90's. We were happy that we were able to reciprocate with a dinner after we returned to Ann Arbor several years ago. We felt that Don would have selected a much better wines then those we served for dinner that evening.
Clearly, you and Don had a wonderful marriage and were able to build many memories which you can now reflect upon with great joy.
