Evelyn Faucett Obituary

Faucett, Evelyn Elizabeth 2/28/1917 - 9/2/2016 Evelyn was born in Moradabad, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Her parents, Robert Isaac Faucett and Myrtle Bare Faucett, were Methodist missionaries in India for many decades as were her grandparents, Charles Lysander Bare and Susan Winchell Bare. Evelyn was the youngest of four siblings: Marguerite Faucett Holmes, Winchell Faucett and Leonard Faucett. Evelyn's family was remarkable for the love they shared, their love of all things Indian, and their strong commitment to religious values and principles common to the world's religions. Evelyn attended the Woodstock School, a boarding school in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, where she enjoyed its spectacular views of the Himalayas and also enjoyed being together with her older sister, Marguerite, a teacher at the school. Evelyn moved to Indianola, Iowa in 1935 to attend Simpson College, graduating in 1939. She was president of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and thus was a sorority sister with her great niece, Elizabeth Holmes Spaulding, a Pi Beta Phi graduate of Knox College and her grandmother, Susan Winchell Bare. Evelyn's yearbook noted that she was "Just so sweet and peppy that everyone likes her." Characteristics that never changed throughout her entire life. After World War II, Evelyn and her dear friend, Sue Warren, bicycled 1000 miles across England and Europe, ending their memorable trip in Paris, the City of Light. As Americans traveling on a shoestring they were greeted warmly everywhere they went. Following in the footsteps of other family members, Evelyn had a long and distinguished career in the Methodist church. She was a church secretary and administrator at the First Methodist churches in Evanston, Illinois and Iowa City, Iowa. She had a lively time in Iowa City living in a tiny 3rd floor walk-up apartment in a neighborhood that consisted mostly of student apartments and sorority houses. Subsequently, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee where she lived with Sue Warren for many years and where she continued to be very active in church work. She moved to Chelsea Retirement Community (CRC) in 2012 and had great affection for CRC residents and staff. A wonderful place to live! At CRC she was together for several weeks with her brother, Winchell Faucett, who had just moved to CRC, and helped celebrate his 105th birthday before he passed away a few days after that. Evelyn's loving family includes her nephew, Robert Holmes, and her honorary niece, Sara Holmes, as well as her nieces Ellen Faucett and Debbie Faucett. She is also survived by great niece, Elizabeth (Holmes) Spaulding, husband Dan Spaulding and daughter Abby Spaulding. Also surviving are her great nephew, Charles Holmes, wife Jen Lockwood and their children, Sophie, Will and Ingrid Holmes. A memorial service for Evelyn will be held on Monday, October 3rd at the CRC chapel at 10:00 am followed by a reception at Dancey House, 801 W. Middle St. Chelsea, Michigan. Memorial contributions should be sent to the CRC Chaplain's Fund. For further information contact Robert Holmes at [email protected].

Evelyn was an important person to our whole family: a more than able secretary and church administrator at First Methodist Iowa City when my dad was senior pastor, 1962-1972, she was also a good friend to my Mom. She saved my toddler brother's life twice, when he got himself into dicey situations in fellowship hall, and on the roof of our parsonage next door. To me, Evelyn was a revelation. She was my friend too, even though I was only 8 years old when I met her. I was impressed with her British-made bicycle with 3 gears, which she let me ride. (She never told me she took it on a 1,000-mile adventure in Europe!) I remember all the times she babysat us, and we bird-sat her chatty Mynah. Evelyn sparkled with kindness, adventure, faith and a great sense of humor. She was one of a kind.
