William Haynes Obituary

BILL HAYNES. William Haynes, a beloved school music teacher and community band leader, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016. He was 53.
Haynes was killed in an apparent carjacking at a Sandy Springs storage rental facility.
Bill Haynes was a music and drama teacher at E. Rivers Elementary, an Atlanta public school located in Buckhead. He was also director of The Alpharetta City Band, an adult community band.
Haynes came to E. Rivers Elementary 16 months ago from Fulton County Schools, where he was band director at Creekview Elementary in Alpharetta, Ga. He formerly was the founding band director at Centennial High School in Roswell, Ga., and was band director and teacher at Hardaway High School in Columbus, Ga., according to the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer.
"If somebody had said give me your car keys, he would've given them the car keys," Alpharetta band program supervisor Don Nahser told Channel 2 Action News. "He would go out of his way to help you."
Haynes and Flowery Branch Mayor Mike Miller were friends.
"I read and hear everyday about senseless violence, but it is overwhelming when it hits home and someone you knew and considered a friend is involved," Miller said in a Facebook post.
"R.I.P. Bill. I will see you again one day in heaven, but the euphonium section up there is sounding a little better today."
A funeral will be held at J.C. Kirby Funeral Chapel on Lovers Lane in Bowling Green, KY on December 27th, at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 26th , from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Tuesday from 9:00 am until the service at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Bill Haynes Memorial Horn Fund at American Bank and Trust, 1302 Scottsville Road, P.O. Box 688, Bowling Green, KY 42102-0688.

This is probably "out of the ordinary", but I feel compelled to thank all of the wonderful people who have left such beautiful comments, thoughts, memories and lovely notes about my son - you have no idea how much comfort I receive from reading and re-reading these. Tears may come occasionally as I read some of them, or as I remember those of you that I have met as I visited him in GA, but the tears are fine - and welcome because of the comfort you have brought me.

Thank you all so much and I wish blessings on you and I thank you for being a part of Bill's life and for loving him and missing him. I am trying to concentrate on being thankful for having him in my life for 53 years rather than his passing.
I thank the newspaper for keeping these messages available so that I can come back over and over and read them.

Blessings to you, with love and appreciation, Kay White

I didn't know Mr. Haynes very closely, but I know that he had a major impact on my high school's music program at Centennial High School, and I'm incredibly grateful for that. Moreover, Mr. Haynes' contribution to the music played by students throughout Fulton County will never be forgotten. Thank you, Mr. Haynes, for all you've done for the beautiful music in my schools.

I thank Mr. Haynes for the music he taught my daughter, and her classmates. She brought home his music often, singing them spontaneously, with a clear emotional connection. Those songs will ring on to eternity. He often greeted the children and parents at the front door of our school, as they entered in the morning, and was clearly dedicated to his role as educator. He will be missed, and his music will continue to play on in the hearts, thoughts, words and lives of all he touched. Schools are a place for communities to connect, jointly teaching and raising their children. This community has lost a leader, and will certainly miss his presence.

I am deeply sorry to hear about the untimely passing of dear Bill. I worked with him at Centennial H.S. for years when that school first opened. He was so much fun to be around. He would come to department meetings with a Seinfeld trivia contest and we would laugh. His students loved working with him during the summer to prepare for football season. Everyone just loved being around him. My thoughts and prayers are with Bill's family and friends. Thanks for sharing him with us, our lives have been blessed by knowing Bill Haynes.

Because our son was in band at Centennial High, Bill was one of the first people we met when Bert started high school. He was a wonderful musician and teacher but most of all he cared deeply about his students. It was a pleasure to be a "band parent" and get to spend seemingly countless hours getting ready for halftime shows, concerts and going on band trips because Bill is as a joy to be around. He never met a stranger and always had a smile and a joke. He will be sorely missed.

Bill's death has left a huge hole in my heart. It's amazing how well you can get to know someone by cutting their hair every month for 15 years. He was one of the few people that could stick it to me. The kind of "being made fun of" you look forward to. I loved it! He was hilarious. People would hover around my salon just to hear us banter. He, of course, outwitted me by immeasurable amounts. I loved him. I still love him. I'm so sad for his family. I just feel so lucky to have known him. To have had him in my life for as long as I did.

We will miss Mr Haynes deeply. He was able to share his love of music with so many people, including my son. Panos only truly began to love & participate in music classes with Mr Haynes teaching him. We will be eternally grateful for his gift, and will think of him whenever Panos is joyfully singing.
May his Memory be Eternal!

Bill,
I loved working with each day. You made me laugh and smile in the best and worst situations. I valued your work ethic day in and day out. You refused to rest. You went from job to job with a smile. I will miss driving in each day and pulling up beside you, walking in to work talking about our day ahead. Thank you for all you've done for rivers. You are my teacher of the year! Xxoo

Bill Haynes was beyond talented across many respects. His sense of humor is undeniable. He will truly be missed by the E. Rivers community. He's simply the best. Truly, he didn't deserve his fate. A great guy gone way too soon!

May the God of tender mercies comfort the family and friends during this difficult time of deep sorrow.

He was an awesome teacher who went far above the call of duty. I remember the day I told Mr. Haynes that because of the recent accidents involving children, I did not want my son traveling to a music event with a student driver. He offered to allow my son to drive with him and this took a heavy load off of my plate. He was kind and thoughtful and provided such good experiences for both of my sons when they were in high school. I pray that God will draw closer to those he left behind. May his legacy of love brightly shine in the hearts of the children in these dark days ahead. Rest in peace Mr. Hayes.

Bill was one of the funniest, smartest, biggest-hearted people I've ever known. I was in awe of his seemingly effortless mastery of everything from pop culture trivia to the most complex musical scores to just about any other subject that came up. He wrapped it all in humility, self-deprecation, and lightning-quick, razor-sharp wit - along with a genuine, perceptive concern for his family and friends.

Bill was a superb musician and a beloved teacher and conductor. He loved making music, he loved his work, and he cared deeply about the people in his life. I will treasure the memories of our 25 years of friendship - but I would trade them all to give him back to the world so he could live out his life in full ... a life that meant so much to so many.

Bill,
I'll never forget the hours we spent together at triathlons. Your energy, willingness to work and humor were unparalleled. Such talent to be snuffed out way too soon.

Rest in Peace my friend.
