Depayne Middleton Doctor Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 18, 2015.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Whether she was working with college students or Charleston's poorest residents, DePayne Middleton-Doctor wanted to be in a position to help people.

So co-workers weren't surprised when she decided to become a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

"She was a woman of God," said Joel Crawford, who worked with Middleton-Doctor at Southern Wesleyan University's campus in Charleston. "She was strong in her faith."

Middleton-Doctor, a 49-year-old mother of four daughters, just started her job as an enrollment counselor at the university in December, said Crawford, who worked with her as a student services coordinator.

Before that, Middleton-Doctor had been employed for several years by Charleston County, where she helped administer grants aimed at helping the county's poorest residents with problems they couldn't otherwise afford to fix such as repairing roofs or septic tanks, said J. Elliott Summey, chairman of the Charleston County Council. He said she left her county job in 2005.

Crawford said Middleton-Doctor often went to midweek prayer meetings at Emanuel AME Church as she worked toward becoming a minister.

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
Rev. Depayne's lived this for her life surely brings honor to God and her family. We look forward to 1Thessalonians 4:16:

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

Depayne was our 2010 Census manager. She led us with the grace mentioned so often this past week... keeping any negative feelings to herself and never speaking poorly of anyone. I admired Depayne and am thankful that our paths crossed since 2010. A thank you to Depayne's daughters for sharing your mom with us. She was one of the best I've met.

God In His Glory
By Hazel Louise Smalls
God in His Glory
Gave us each a way to tell his story
I share with you what is shared with me
Just to remind you God is wherever you be
He wants us to stand up in the gap
For everyone even the babe in mothers lap
Let your light shine so others can see God in you
You can change someone's life through and though
Let them see the joy in you
And help them to see God in all you do
It take very little to give someone hope Family hold on to God's unchanging hands. My prayers are always with you. Remember Go9d is with you.
Even when they find it hardest to cope
Let them know of the hill where cometh their help
Lead them there they have to walk it them self
We each have to do a self inventory
For within us each in an untold story
God gave us Our Father's Prayer
Isn't it great how for each of us he care
There is no power more powerful than love
No matter to what degree learn from a pair of dove
They stay together though pushed and shove
They are stuck with the adhesive called love
Truth and honestly he brings us through the storm
Walk with God allow His grace to lead you home

My heart was heavy when I learned that DePayne was one of the Emanuel Nine. We graduated from the Southern Wesleyan LEAP in 1994 and used to study together. I liked her laugh, voice, and calming demeanor - what a perfect outcome that she was studying to become a minister of the AME Church. I will never forget her. To the Middleton-Doctor family, hold on to God's unchanging hand as he will surround you at all times. Blessings.

May our dear Lord sustain and comfort you as you mourn the loss of your dear Rev. DePayne. We never know when our time will come, but springing to the arms of Jesus from your earthly life's blood, your church, is seemly regardless of the circumstances. As the Church's first Martyr, Stephen, cried out that he saw the heavens opened and Jesus at the right hand of God with the angels, I believe that all those lost at Mother Emanuel also saw the heavens open and our Lord beckoning them to come to their reward. May God bless and comfort you.

June 25, 2015

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Dear Middleton-Doctor Family
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
You have given Depayne. She will have eternal life. I think that is important. My family have watched and been so proud of your family: Faith and trust in Christ. There has been so much swirling around it is so hard to keep up with what is right. Y'all know what is right.
I lived in Charleston 5 years ago in Ansonborough. I know your beautiful Church Family. Although I do not know you personally, please know your extended Charleston family Loves and is praying for you.
Together there will be change. Your best example has set the stage for HUGE change. Please know, we love you and hate you are having to deal with this. Your loss is bringing the whole country together, but no family should have to endure that to make change.
Trust the Lord conquers all.
Deepest sympathy, Lance Hiatt and Tim Parks

I'm so sorry for your loss, but awed by your attitude - that has been the thing which (so far as I can see) has dominated the press - that you are leading Charleston in expressions of forgiveness and genuine love (the hard stuff), and promoting unity and community in the face of such violence, is inspiring and incredible, and I take my hat off to you.

Thank you for the lessons, given at such a difficult time - they are poignant and important.
