I was deeply saddened to hear about my old friend. I met New Orleans Chief Richard Pennington while I was Chief of Police in Kenner Louisiana. We grew to be great friends and partners against crime. Chief Pennington was able to communicate with Louisiana Chiefs of cities of all sizes and made everyone feel comfortable and important. In our profession effectiveness is typically judged by crime statistics. Although he got an A+ in that category there is so much more. He understood how his work impacted the lives of everyone in the community. Chief Pennington was the consummate lawmen. Allow me to express my deepest condolences to his entire family.

I first met Richard soon after he graduated from Tolleston High School in Gary, we lived in the same neighborhood Tarrytown, he was always pleasant. Each time he returned to Gary he would make time to visit my mother until she passed. My family and I were so proud of him and his accomplishments. Each time there would be a news story on TV I would tell my husband he was my friend from high school and my neighborhood. Richard had a pleasant personality and I will always remember him saying he doesn't dance well but he always would dance on "Dancing in the Streets". I will be praying for the family and know they have fond memories of him as well. Monica Grundy-Sharp

I met Richard when I was an anchor at WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C..in 1984. He was the consummate gentleman. When my mother came to D.C. From Germany, Richard gave her a wonderful tour of our beautiful city. She was so grateful and I was, too!

Richard's promotions throughout his career were no surprise. He was a lifelong learner. He studied hard so that he could bring his best game to his profession.

Richard had a ready laugh and could find the humor in most things.

Our last conversations before he left the DC area focused on the importance of having a personal relattionship with Jesus Christ and what that would mean for his final destination.

I pray strength for his family as they go through this difficult time.

May peace be a constant companion.

Renee,

Richard spoke so fondly of you and your marriage relationship and advised me to pattern my marriage to Barbara in the same way with God as our leader. You were always his Queen and we often spoke of the respective pedestals we placed you both on without limits. There will be such a void in this world without him here. We are saddened knowing of your loss. We know the Lord knows how to comfort you and relieve your pain and sorrow. We will all miss him dearly but will always keep the love in our hearts. Barbara and I pray that God will strengthen you and keep your spirits uplifted.

God's Speed,

Clyde and Barbara Lockley

The world mourns the loss, as we remember the greatness of Richard Pennington. He gave his life to preserving law and order. His incredible and masterful knowledge and procedures to prevent crime were unmatched, and he kept us all safe, in only the way he could. But more than that, he was one of God's special earth angels, loved by ALL. He is now heaven's angel. Keeping Rene and little Richard in our prayers and hoping their memories comfort them at this most difficult time.

New Orleans mourns the loss of former Chief of Police, Richard Pennington. He was loved by every single person on this earth that touched his life.
