Born on March 25, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York, Eugene was a well-respected doctor, war veteran, and community volunteer. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from City College of New York, Eugene served as a medic in World War II, landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day. Following his service, he attended Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine where he met Sylvia, his wife of 64 years. A family physician in Detroit and Dearborn, Michigan for 35 years, he was on the staff of Zeiger Osteopathic Hospital (Detroit, MI) and served as chief of staff at Botsford General Hospital (Farmington Hills, MI). Active with the Boys Club of Greater Detroit, he was honored with the Friend of the Boy award for his service as a board member as well as his work performing physical exams for its members and mentoring many young men, especially those interested in medicine. He and his wife relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1996, and Eugene worked part-time at St. Luke's Behavioral Health Center until 2013. A lifetime member of the Michigan and Arizona osteopathic medical associations and a recipient of ASAM's lifetime achievement award, he was a beloved and valued friend, colleague, and mentor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Zalman and Rose Sassulsky, as well as his sister, Sophie Sands. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; sons, Mark (Charisse) and Larry (Edee); and seven grandchildren. The epitome of Gentleman

Just received Mrs. Sands card in the mail today. I'm so sorry for your loss. Dr. Sands was the best boss I ever had. He was so easy going and explained anything about medicine I asked him. I loved working for him and all of his patients loved him dearly. My parents and grandmother were also his patients. I'm so glad I kept in touch with Dr. & Mrs. Sands over the years as our families grew. I am truly saddened by his passing. The world has lost a great man and doctor. My thoughts and prayers are with the Sands family at this time. Dr. Sands was an angel on earth, now he is an angel in heaven.

We were very saddened to hear of Gene's death. He was our life-long friend ever since we first moved to Detroit to interne at Zieger Osteopathic Hospital. He was my mentor while interning, and afterward when we both were part of the Zieger Clinical Group. He taught me so much medicine and how to really be a doctor. I shall always be grateful for having known him and his family.....they have always been such an integral part of our lives. Gene, when you reach the pearly gates, and are welcomed into heaven, I'm sure you will hear a loud "AMEN"....for you were truly a "mensch." God rest your soul, my brother.

Gene's memory will always be with me. He signed my internship diploma and handed it to me. Dr Sands was the consummate gentleman. I loved making rounds with him at Zieger Hospital.

Dr Sands was an inspiring man who showed such compassion and guidance to his patients and to the nursing staff at St Luke's Hospital. I will miss him greatly. Rest in Peace
