Obituary

Betty Ann Grove, an actress, singer and dancer, died Nov. 13, according to multiple news sources. She was 86.

The cause of death was not announced.

Grove replaced Lisa Kirk as Bianca on Broadway in "Kiss Me, Kate." She later appeared in the musicals "I Remember Mama," "George M!" and a 1980s revival of "On Your Toes."

Grove, who was born Sept. 9, 1929, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, had a powerful singing voice. She recorded songs in the 1950s including "Waltzing Down the Aisle."

The pop singer was a frequent guest on Jack Paar's "Tonight Show" as well as "Stop the Music," "The Bert Parks Show," "Summer Holiday," "The Arthur Murray Party" and "Ozark Jubilee."

In 1953, she was featured on the cover of Look magazine as one of "America's Most Televised Women."

In a 1952 magazine article, Parks described Grove's frenetic pace during five months in 1950 when she performed in both "Stop the Music" on television and "Kiss Me, Kate" on Broadway:

"At 7:30 every Thursday night, she would rush into a dressing room at ABC's Ritz Theatre on West 48th Street, change into her TV costume, tear onstage for her numbers, change again into her first act 'Kiss Me Kate' togs, make a beeline for the Shubert Theatre on West 44th Street, arriving just in time for her onstage cue," Parks remembered. "All this following a full day of rehearsing.

"But audiences never had a hint of her exhausting routine, and night after night her 'True to You in My Fashion' and 'Why Can't You Behave' were show stoppers."

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Hunting.
