DEAR HARTNETT FAMILY AND FRIENDS, I'M SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT MR. HARTNETT- WE LOST ONE HELLUVA GUY. IN THE EARLY 80'S, I WAS A CRIMINAL JUSTICE STUDENT AT ECC. I WAS ALSO A COMPETITIVE BODY BUILDER WEIGHING AROUND 225 LBS. OFTEN, MR. HARTNETT WOULD "SELECT" ME TO SHOW HOW TO PROPERLY HANDLE AN INDIVIDUAL. HE WOULD THROW ME AROUND LIKE A RAG DOLL!- OF COURSE, VERY PROFESSIONALLY! I WAS ALWAYS HONORED WHEN HE SELECTED ME. HE TOLD US AWESOME STORIES. HE WAS VERY FIRM, YET VERY FAIR. HE ALWAYS HAD 100% OF EVERYONE'S ATTENTION. BOY DID HE COMMAND A ROOM! I GRADUATED FROM ECC,THEN WENT TO BUFF STATE. I THOUGHT I WOULD PURSUE A CRIMINAL JUSTICE POSITION, BUT I ENDED UP BEING A FINANCIAL ADVISOR/STOCKBROKER. WHEN I WOULD SEE MR. HARTNETT AT THE BILLS AND SABRES GAMES I ALWAYS MADE IT A POINT TO SAY HELLO, SEE HOW HE WAS DOING, AND GIVE HIM AN UPDATE ON MY CAREER.I ALWAYS HOPED HE WASN'T DISAPPOINTED IN ME NOT BEING IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE FIELD. LIKE SO MANY OTHERS, I HAD THE UTMOST RESPECT FOR THIS MAN. MY LIFE HAS SURELY BEEN ENRICHED WITH THE PLEASURE OF KNOWING HIM. ALL OF YOU ARE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE HAD SUCH A GREAT MAN IN YOUR LIVES.

Dear Hartnett Family,
I first met Don in 1964 when I was a young FBI agent in New York City, when we played on an FBI softball team in New City, New York. Although we never worked together in the ensuing years, we stayed in touch and saw each other periodically after I returned my hometown, Erie, PA. Be proud of his legacy, he was one of the good guys and a natural leader.

Dear Hartnett Family,
We are sorry to be missing the funeral today. We are saddened by Don's passing and sorry to miss seeing you all today.
Don was such an inspiration to Gil while growing up as more than just a cousin. He was a role model. He was always so kind and generous to us all and we will miss him. He was a man with a Big presence and he leaves a big hole here on earth. We know that he will be with Nancy, the 3 Holfeldter sisters, and Marcella having some nice parties up there and keeping an eye on the girls!
Bon Voyage dear Don. We hope to honor all their memories by keeping in touch with our Buffalo cousins. Peace, Love, and Light.
Sincerely, Gil, Denise , Colin & Claire Rieser.

Jim,
Our sincere condolences go out to you and the entire Hartnett family. I only met your Dad once but it was memorable. It was at a Buffalo / Miami game at Rich Stadium and your Dad was a gracious host. I talk about that game all the time – when your Dad got us down in the locker room after the game to see some unique characters - Marino , Flutie and Bruce Smith. Your Dad was a class act and his kids and grandkids should be very proud of this great man..

I worked with Don for several years at the Buffalo Bills games. Don was one of the most friendly person I have ever meet. Even when I craked up the Bills Van prior to taking the game officials to the airport, Don never raised his voice and took care of everything with the Bills, and the owner of a parked truck I damaged. So sorry a wonderful person has left us and my thoughts are with his family.

While I did not know him, I know how former FBI Agents devote themselves to God, family, and country. I also know that his service as a past President of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI was an honor bestowed on him by his peers, and it is a sign of great respect. To your family, please accept my condolences on this great loss.
