James CAMPBELL Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Jan. 11 to Jan. 15, 2014.
CAMPBELL, James Robert (Jim)
January 15, 1939 – Oyen, AB
January 8, 2014 – Calgary, AB
Celebrating the wonderful life of James Robert Campbell (January 15, 1939 – January 8, 2014). Jim lived an active, full and happy life. He loved spending time outdoors cross country skiing, hiking and biking both here in lovely Alberta as well as traveling around the world. Following his retirement from teaching high school and acting as the Supervisor of Social Studies with the Calgary Board of Education, he became a Master Gardener and spent much of his time cultivating an award- winning garden at his home. He was a "jack of all trades" fixing and making almost anything. He even added published author to his list of accomplishments, penning his memoires of life growing up in a small town in the 1950's in the book, "To Oyen With Love." Jim strove to make the most of each day, relishing in his interactions with others. Jim shared a 52 year love affair with his wife Louise (Gripp), having grown up together in Oyen, Alberta then venturing to Calgary to pursue his career and raise a family. Jim was a caring and involved father to three daughters – Marlene (Wes Bader), Carol (Les Pruden) and Nancy (Tom Blanchette). Jim also enjoyed spending time with the younger generation of his family (Samantha and Alex Bader, Kelly and Gregg Pruden, and granddogs Jones and Finn). He is survived by his seven siblings Bill (Virginia), Marion Jacobs, Pat (Glen Knaus), Reg (Shirley), Frank (Alice), Sylvia (Denis Vold) and Muriel (Joe Sevcik). He is also survived by sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol (Darrow Tye), Norma (Bob Brown), John Booth and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jim formed countless friendships and close relationships through the many facets of his life – Senior's activity groups, Oyenites, education colleagues, and extended family. He loved hosting and going to parties, entertaining others with his quick wit, practical jokes, and great sense of humour. Jim's philosophy of life was to enjoy the journey, live simply, and be grateful. He lived a life of supporting others through love and helpfulness, and embracing the joys and struggles that are a part of the journey. He was a unique character in this world and has left a mark on the hearts and minds of all who knew him. The family invites you to join them in a Celebration of Life at The Glencoe Club in Calgary, Alberta, on Friday, January 17 at 2:00 p.m. (636 – 29 Avenue S.W.). In honour of his courageous and inspirational battle with Pancreatic Cancer, as well as the great care he received, if friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Rosedale Hospice, 1245 – 70 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2H 2X8 (Phone 403-284-5195; [email protected]). Special thanks to the Rosedale Hospice staff as well as Dr. Ken Cody and Melissa.

Dear Louise and Family,
Sincerest condolences. As my cooperating teacher at SWC in 1976,I could not have run into a more caring and influential character. Working with Jim and his wingmate, Grant Dustin, I learned many of the ins and outs of teaching Social Studies. More so, I learned to appreciate the diversity of the students in any given classroom. Jim's great sense of humour was appreciated by all. Louise,I always felt very welcome in your home and have many lasting memories of those times.
Kindest regards,

Condolences to all of the Campbell Girls and the extended family. Uncle Jim was one of the most interesting people I have ever met. The keen wit and his positive view of the world along with his penchant for fun and frivolity stand out as paramount fixtures on how he inspired me to live life fully, joyfully.

When I was first starting out in my career, he also literally gave me the shirts err suits off his back; along with some sage wisdom as to how to take care of both the clothes as well as myself in a business setting. We all will love him forever.

January 17, 2014

Louise -
When I think of Jim, I think of his big grin. He was always the most positive person I knew and he always lit up the room. I am so glad we've kept in touch with both of you over the years. I will miss him. My thoughts are with you Louise as you go through your grief.

Dear Louise and Family,
I am so sorry to be missing the Celebration! I think our history began when Marlene married "our neighbor's son"... I can still hear and see Jim and his "girls" singing to the bride and groom... "We just called to say we love you..." Since then we have connected in Bigfork, MT several times. I am especially happy to have Jim's trilogy. You have all been very brave throughout this ordeal but no more than Jim himself. Much Aloha!

Dear Louise and Family
Please accept our heartfelt sympathy on Jim's passing. Bill met Jim a few times with the Churchill Golden Bulldogs. We so enjoyed walking round your garden and I have fond memories of the way you both watched out for me when I xc skied with you when you were with Skrastins. You both spent a few days in our Time Share in Banff a few years ago and we still remember with pleasure the bottle of bubbly you left in the frig for us. Happier times.

Our thoughts are with you.

Sincerely,

We are very sorry to hear the sad news of the loss of a good friend, a strong active person like Jim. He touched our hearts through the years in many ways. Just a short time ago you had a great celebration at your 50th Wedding Anniversary. We would like to extend to all of you, that we will keep these good memorable memories of Jim for a long long time. Louise, Marlene, Carol and Nancy,
I will remember visiting often as a child and not quite knowing if there was a joke around the corner or prank that was being played. What fun and spontaneous times! Very enjoyable if you weren't the one being pranked for sure!

What a great commitment to you girls and you Louise as a Dad, Friend, Support System, Life Mate, Soccer Coach, Father and one to always make you smile!
Love and support goes out to your family. Jim, or to me as a kid, Mr. Campbell - will be missed and loved so much!
The first time I met Mr. Campbell was when he would jog around the park out back of our house - "who is that fit fellow", people would say! (In envy, I am sure!)
He will be keeping them on their toes in heaven and wearing some jogging shoes with wings - just lightly running around the clouds in Heaven. Keeping all of those up there on their toes... having some humor up there too!
hugs and love goes out to all of the family, Beth Castle

A fond farewell to Jim. Knowing you has been an honour. Watching Social Studies educators like my dad and you inspire multiple generations led me down the same path.

As well, the family gatherings at conferences in Phoenix, or Calgary, or Red Deer taught me the importance of work and play. Who knew we could have that much fun in Arizona restaurants and not get kicked out.

Louise and family, my sincerest condolences for your loss. I know that you won't be short of fantastic and humorous memories.

I am saddened to hear of Jim's passing.

I will remember Jim's unwavering dedication to teaching and learning, his attention to a vision of education which placed students firmly at the center of all we do as educators. Jim understood the pivotal role classroom teachers play in this work. Jim inspired, challenged, motivated, critiqued and praised. He held us all to a standard few could achieve but encouraged us all to work toward. I became a better teacher because of Jim.

Dear Louise and Family,

Jim was a special colleague who could always be depended on for good advice, support and friendship. He was an excellent educator and his positive outlook and humour enriched the lives of others. Jim made a difference in my life, that I will always be thankful for.

My parents would also like to pass on their heartfelt sympathy. They appreciated Jim (as well as you Louise) as longtime neighbours who always took the time to chat and express an interest in them. He will be certainly be missed.

We always enjoyed any interaction with Jim. There was always a twinkle and an expectation of jocular engagement. Jim was a Master teacher, a leader for whom positive involvement with others was uppermost. Yet his focus on important outcomes when required resulted in proactive results. Even though he was coping with cancer he remained positive and strong. Those who knew Jim personally will miss this wonderful man and will relish the effect on their own lives. Our condolences to Louise and family. Thanks for sharing.

Louise and girls,

My heart is breaking for you! The Campbell clan has always held a special place in my life - family visits, babysitting, curling, so many antics and much laughter. Humour and giving have always been associated with the parents, in particular. Jim's wry smile will be sorely missed.

Please accept our deepest sympathy and hug those happy memories tight!

To Louise, Marlene, Carol, Nancy and families.

Our sincere sympathy for you and just want to wish you our heart-felt well wishes. We are so sorry to hear of your loss and want you to know that our prayers are with you.

We will miss Coach Campbell - "Crazy Campbell" because he had such a quick wit and wonderful sense of humour. The world is missing one heck of a soccer coach which we had a chance of having a lot of great games with Jim encouraging us from the sidelines and telling us not to give up. He sure made soccer a lot of fun!

I know my family embraces the time we spent with all your family in the Triwood community and on soccer road trips.

Big hugs,

Dear Louise and family. I first met Jim in the late '70's when,as a young Social Studies teacher at Louis Riel I needed an intervention. Fortunately for me this was an enlightened era when the CBE included a wealth of specialists in English and Social Studies. Jim came to my rescue and with his encouragement I stayed with the program for almost 30 years. Jim continued to inspire me as he Matured and took up various extra curricular activities including, to my great delight, SALSA dancing. Quel surprise!

Gusto and vigour are words I would use to describe his attitude to life.

It was my pleasure and honour to know your husband and father.

To Jim's family,
I am sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I have a special place for him in my memories. I met Jim when I was still a student teacher. Shortly afterwards, he called me and suggested I apply with a school in Calgary. His recommendation allowed me to get my first permanent teaching position. That led to 30 years of teaching before I retired from the CBE. I'd like to extend my sympathies to his daughter Carol and son-in-law Les. We (myself, my wife Sharon, and daughter Michelle) were fortunate to know them in the world of Ringette, which just goes to show it's a small world. And Jim occupied a big part of it.

It didn't matter if it was a dining tent in Montana, a Palm Springs get together, or group meal in The Algarve, people could always depend upon Jim to enliven the event. I had "Mr. Campbell" as a Social Studies teacher when I went to Bowness Senior High. Lucky was the student who had him as a teacher. He had a way of letting every single student think that he/she was the center of his attention. I later became a teacher and would run into him at various educational functions. He was always "Mr. Campbell" to me and even now in my retirement I think of him as "Mr. Campbell". What a gem and what an amazing model for a struggling mixed up kid from Bowness.
