Daniel McDonnell Obituary

Daniel A. ‘Doc' McDonnell D.O. 1936 - 2015
79, passed away Oct. 2, 2015. He leaves his wife of 51 years, Karen (Shanklin), and four children: Kathleen DiLorenzo (Rich), Maureen, Keri (Brad Hannan), and Daniel W. He is also survived by his brother, Harry McDonnell D.O., niece Mary McDonnell, nephews Michael McDonnell D.O. (Patricia), Michael and Chase Carbone, granddaughter Gianna DiLorenzo, great-nieces Shannon and Colleen McDonnell, extended family in Canada, and many friends and former patients.
Daniel was born in Detroit, Mich., on Feb. 16, 1936, to Michael and Dorothy (White) McDonnell, He attended St Gabriel's, University of Detroit Jesuit High School, and the University of Detroit. Daniel achieved his life-long goal of serving as a physician, a journey which began at the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa, continued with a medical internship in Warren, Ohio, and culminated in the achievement of Board Certification in General Practice. Dr. Dan purchased the Bolivar Clinic in 1963, where he was subsequently joined by his brother, Dr. Harry McDonnell; they practiced together for 30 plus years. Dr. Dan was one of the original physicians at the former Doctor's Hospital, Massillon, and delivered the first baby at the fledgling hospital.
During his career, Dr. Dan participated in numerous Osteopathic organizations. He was a member of the former St Stephen's Catholic Church and served in numerous capacities in support of the parish.
Dr. Dan had a never-ending passion for knowledge, and amassed a wide collection of books and medical journals. Amidst conversations with family and friends, he would pause and disappear, digging through his collection until he would resurface with an article that was perfectly relevant to the conversation, which would then resume. His passion to share knowledge lives on, as Dr. Dan requested that his body be donated to Ohio University, Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, where it will be studied as part of the education of medical students.
The family is grateful to the devoted caregivers who supported Dr. Dan in his final years, particularly Janice Currence, Diane Davis, and Brenda Symons.
To celebrate Dr. Dan's life, family and friends will be received beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015 at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Zoar, followed by a memorial Mass at 11 a.m. and an Irish wake/ luncheon thereafter. Because Dr. Dan was quite practical, the family requests that those wishing to send flowers consider an alternate donation to either the:
€ University of Detroit Jesuit High School (https://www.uofdjesuit.org/tribute)
€ Stark County Parkinson Support Group, c/o Marcia Short, 1309 Springhill Ave N.E., Massillon, OH 44646.

Dr. Dan's spirit will never end. He was a man of great intelligence and and I will always remember his sometimes gruff demeanor on the outside but a caring, loving, devoted man on the inside, his way of letting you know his returned respect for you.

Karen and Family: Doc loved life and lived it to the fullest. My greatest memory of the two of you was his sincere enjoyment in the musical programs he enjoyed from guest artists at Bolivar Elementary. A truly gifted physician, a person who cherished his family and his life. Karen, you were his special angel for all his years. Children, he wanted only the best for each of you and was so proud of your accomplishments. May you be blessed with all the great memories of your life with him. His legacy - he will not be forgotten. Becky and I send our most sincere condolences and we know he is at peace. God's Love be with you

Karen,

I believe the motto for Jesuits is to be "a man for others'. I knew Dan decades ago. From then, and from the notes I've just read, he was truly that, a man for others. What I remember so vividly was his passion, his patience, and his intelligent ways! I was never bored when I was with him, that's for sure!! I also remember his love for you and his children. He was so proud of their accomplishments. I know it was so very long ago but I truly have never forgotten him or his kindness to me. I am so very sorry for your loss. Please accept my most sincere condolences. We lost a great one!

Dear Karen , Dr Harry & families:

Words cannot express my sympathies for your loss. Dr. Dan was a special part of Bob & my life. Not only as our physician since 1976, but as a friend.
He truly was dedicated to his work as well as his family, patients and friends.
Without a doubt he will be missed by many.
His dry humor will not be forgotten either.
You are in my "thoughts and prayers".

Sincerely, Arletta Snyder
