Jim was my sweetmate in college at Winthrop. He was an awesome guy and wonderful friend. We sat around many nights talking and Jim jaming out on the guitar. Rest in peace my friend.

I only just learned of Jim's passing through a Winthrop U. Magazine. I am sitting here in shock and filled with memories of Jim. He was always so fun to be around and never missed a moment to pop by my dorm room and beg for one of my "skinny ties" to wear (don't laugh...guys and gals were all wearing them back in the day.) he and I met up after graduation in charleston, sc and had a great time reconnecting. To the family of one who made a positive impact on my life and will always be fondly be remembered....I wish you peace.

I have combined two images here, to show the contrast and similarity between different ages. I flipped the kindergarten picture to face the other way, and tried to remove the bit of hair hanging down. There is definitely a strong resemblance between the two images.(JAMES_GIBSON_THE_MAN_AND_CHILD_IMAGES_SIDE_BY_SIDE).*

My freshman year at Winthrop was Gib's senior year. Just about every Sunday night that year, a bunch us basketball players would come to my room. We would watch The Big Valley and eat popcorn. The show was over by 11:00 pm. Gib stayed until 3:00 am talking about cars, basketball and music. Jim had a joy of life that was infectious. He made a tough time not so tough and good time into a great time. My heart goes out to his family. Gib was loved by many. I am very thankful for the time I got spend with Gib.

I first knew James Gibson in Kindergarten. I still have the class picture, which I will try to post here. (Whittier_Kindergarten_1964-1965_Mrs_Schumaker).*
Due to me changing schools, I hadn't seen him much then until the 10th grade. I played guitar, and once he invited me to his house, (his father's house, where he lived while in high school). And Eric Scortia stopped by, too. Eric Scortia played piano, and they had one in the Gibson house for him to play. He had also been in the same kindergarten class with us.*
I looked up Eric Scortia on the Internet, and he seems to be doing pretty well. It says, on the audicaentertainment website: "Scorch was born and raised in Massillon, Ohio, a tough, working-class town located about sixty miles south of Cleveland, the Midwestern “heart of rock and roll.”"*
Nothing came of it as far as my involvement, because my guitar-playing was not yet that advanced, and I didn't have a big amplifier. (I ended up being just an "at home" guitar player, not being one to socialize much).*
There was one year when we sat at the same lunch table, with a group of about half a dozen. Besides me and James Gibson, we also sat with a guitar player named "Richie" who, while still in high school, was occasionally playing out with a rock band called "Lotus."*
My memory of James Gibson is combined with my memory of other people, and how those of us who were (or wanted to become) musicians would sometimes hang out together in high school.*
I remember asking him about playing basketball for the high school team. I thought, "Well, you're tall, so it must come easy for you." He assured me that he had to spend a lot of time and effort working at it, and they didn't just "give" him a place on the team, just for being tall.*
It's too bad that the newspaper can't say anything about someone until they die. I was totally unaware of what he had been doing all these years, until it was too late to see him.*

James was a good friend and cousin on mine - we were similar ages and for one year growing up I was living in Massillon. We even had a basketball scrimmage where I had to guard him - very tough for me because I was a 6' 2" 9th grader (at LA)and James was a big time Massillon High School star who towered over me. I will remember James for always having a story and that wonderful smile of his.
