J. Stevens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 12, 2012.
TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three American members of his staff were killed in the attack on the U.S. consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi by protesters angry over a film that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad, Libyan officials said Wednesday.

They said Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed Tuesday night when he and a group of embassy employees went to the consulate to try to evacuate staff as the building came under attack by a mob with guns and rocket propelled grenades.

The three Libyan officials who confirmed the deaths were deputy interior minister for eastern Libya Wanis al-Sharaf; Benghazi security chief Abdel-Basit Haroun; and Benghazi city council and security official Ahmed Bousinia.

The State Department said Tuesday that one American was killed in the attack. It has not confirmed the other deaths.

The attack on the Benghazi consulate took place as hundreds of protesters in neighboring Egypt scaled the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and tore down and replaced the American flag with a black Islamic banner.

The attacks in Benghazi and Cairo were the first such assaults on U.S. diplomatic facilities in either country, at a time when both Libya and Egypt are struggling to overcome the turmoil following the ouster of their longtime authoritarian leaders, Muammar Qadhafi and Hosni Mubarak, in uprisings last year.

The protests in both countries were sparked by outrage over a film ridiculing Muhammad produced by an Israeli filmmaker living in California and being promoted by an extreme anti-Muslim Egyptian Christian campaigner in the United States. Excerpts from the film dubbed into Arabic were posted on YouTube.

Stevens, 52, was a career diplomat who spoke Arabic and French and had already served two tours in Libya, including running the office in Benghazi during the revolt against Qadhafi. He was confirmed as ambassador to Libya by the Senate earlier this year.

Before Tuesday, five U.S. ambassadors had been killed in the line of duty, the last being Adolph Dubs in Afghanistan in 1979, according to the State Department historian's office.

I will always remember Chris back 37 years ago as the friend who would NEVER utter a negative word about anyone (including our worst high school teachers !) At U.C. Berkeley when we lived in the same House he was lots of fun while still always remaining the consumate gentleman. He was well informed even back then without pushing his progressive opinions and values on those around him. He frequently had co-eds "throwing" themselves at him, but had too much class to take advantage of those situations. Instead, Chris had longer term relationships in both high school and college with absolute knockout women with class...(here's to you Lynn and Cindy). So, Chris, I've pulled out the Berber prayer rug you brought me from Morocco and it's on our bed each night. We will miss you, brother, and never forget you or our good times as friends.

i continue to lose sleep over Ambassador Stevens passing. Unsettling as it is, I find him a martyr of the beauty of freedom. His name includes "Christ" and "Steven" both who were martyrs. While I'm sure it is of little consolation he has a special place in Heaven. God bless you all

There are no words that I can place here that will lessen the pain brought by your loss. please know that you and Christoper are in our thoughts and prayers.

TO THOSE I LOVE AND THOSE WHO HAVE LOVED ME

When I am gone, release me, let me go.
I have so many things to see and do.
You must not tie yourself to me with tears.
Be happy that we had so many beautiful years.
I gave to you my love, you can only guess
How much you gave to me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you've shown me,
But now it's time I travel on, alone.
So grieve a while for me if you must,
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It's only for a while that we must part,
So bless the memories within your hearts.
I won't be far away, for life goes on.
So, if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can't see or touch me,
I'll be near and if you listen with your hearts,
You'll hear all my love around you,
Soft and clear; and then when you must
Come this way alone, I'll greet you with a
Smile and say, “Welcome Home.”

To the family of Ambassador Stevens:
You do not know me and I did not personally know your loved one, but I have read enough to know he was a noble man who was not afraid to do everything in his power to serve the Libyan people and personally find ways to make the world a better place. I cannot imagine the anguish you feel right now. Ambassador Stevens died a hero. I know that is little consolation to you. I cannot say anything to comfort you, but I just want you to know my heart goes out to you. May you find peace in the assurance that someday you will all be reunited forever.

I am so sad about his pointless death and also so moved by his life. He was a fellow Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco with me years ago. Many of us from that time who have been out of touch for years are getting in touch again remembering Chris and celebrating his life while mourning his awful death. His friendship to so many across the world made a big impact and only makes his death so much more tragic. My heart-felt condolences to his family and close friends. He was a wonderful man.
