I attended Calvary Chapel of South Bay from April 1982-March 1985 while stationed at Los Angeles Air Force Station. When I first started to attend, I was going through a very troubled time in my life. I always enjoyed Pastor Steve's messages, sometimes concluded with self-effacing illustrations. With his walrus moustache, you could mistake him for a softie. But sometimes when you caught his steely eyed look, you knew he had the heart of a shepherd that would take on wolves trying to fleece the flock. I remember his wife Gail's gentleness and son Nathan who was just perhaps 10 or 12. I look forward to seeing him in the Kingdom.

The first time I came to Calvert Chapel South Bay. It was in Carson. I felt so welcome. Pastor Steve was so welcoming and friendly to me. He treated me as a friend. It was that Christ like love that keep me coming. His death was so unexpected and I just could not stop crying for a long time. I know he' s in a better place with no more pain.

I a so sorry to hear about the passing of Pastor Steve. I would listen to his sermons fro California on the radio every weekend. I lived in San Bernardino and worked at Riverside. His messages were always from the heart and real. He would speak to you as if you were sitting across from him having coffee. He will be greatly missed. Thank you, Pastor Steve , for everything that you have done in spreading the word of our precious Lord and challenging us to get closer to him with that personal, deep relationship that only Jesus can fill. My deepest, heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to his family and friends. Prayers for Strength, Wisdom, Courage, Comfort and Understanding.

11 years ago I made a decision to leave the South Bay and move to Micronesia. I had a shoebox filled with Pastor Steve's sermons on cassette tapes and I listened to his messages every night my first years away. Even though I am heartbroken that my kids will never get a chance to meet Pastor Steve, I am so very grateful to have had him as a teacher for all these years. As for my family, we will serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15). My deepest condolences to Gail, their children, and grandchildren. I pray you find comfort in this difficult time.

Pastor Steve has been the epitome of virtue, humility and honor as he passionately served God. If even half of Christian leaders surrendered to God's calling and emulated his character, this nation and the world could experience true revival. May His Shalom comfort your loved ones, Pastor Steve!

We have been attending Calvary Chapel South Bay for 15 years. We have learned so much from you. We have brought friends when they came in from out of town and they would always go back to see you. Some of my sweet memories of you were your baby dedications and also how you would talk about your love of chocolate chip cookies, and in-n-out burger. We also loved your Pug stories. We just loved you and we were blessed to have you as our pastor. Now your blessings are in heaven. We pray for your Mother Helen, your wife Gail, your son, daughter, and grandchildren in their grief. May they find peace .

I started listening to Steve on the radio about 3 years ago. Every morning I was blessed with his teachings and many of his lessons were directly related to my daily struggles. His messages tugged at my heart and I have never heard the word like he presented it. God Bless him. He is with the Lord. Praise God, Amen!!

My family and I attended CC South Bay several year back and had been blessed tremendously by Pastor Steve's teachings. One of the many reasons I was honored to have been a part of Pastor Steve's flock was his humility. Pastor Steve was very relatable to his congregation. My husband had been wounded in the past through unfortunate church experiences and was reluctant to even attend church BUT at the time I was attending CC South Bay & he agreed to go.....he went and was captivated by Pastor Steve's teachings and made CCSB his home. It is with great sadness that I have had to write this as an ending to a great journey with Pastor Steve BUT I do look forward to seeing him again in a reunion in heaven.
May The Lord pour out His amazing love through His peace and comfort to Gail and family. We love you and will continue to pray for you all.

Shocked and saddened by the news of Pastor Steve Mays' passing from earth to eternity. Overjoyed that I will see him again, even though I never personally met him in this life. His teachings have helped me and encouraged me beyond words. My daughter and family fellowshipped at CC Southbay prior to moving to Florida, and will be saddened deeply when I share this news. I am praying for Steve's family, asking the Lord to pour out His great love and care upon each member. God bless all of you.

After relocating to the South Bay a few years ago and attending various churches in the area, I attended Calvery Chapel and heard Pastor Steve preach the word. My heart goes out to the family and the church family for the loss of a true christian spirit. I guess God needed another Angel, but he will surely be missed. In our grief, we can't help but give thanks for all his life touched and all he lead to Christ. May God grant each and every heavy heart His mercy and peace.

To the Calvary Family,
As a fellow struggler with you in dealing with Pastor Steve's death, I am reminded that you don't really lose someone when you know where they are! We haven't lost Steve....not really. Certainly we feel the pain of loss and grief that overwhelm in moments like this, but "we do not grieve as those without hope." Our tears will fall, but "joy will come in the morning." I am a Southern Baptist pastor who has known Steve for a number of years when he came to Jacksonville, Florida for prostate cancer treatment. God knit our hearts together on a level that, frankly, surprised both of us. My heart is broken over this hard news, but I know I will see his smiling face again....without pain, without tears, without sorry....and so shall we ever be with the Lord!
Be blessed dear family and flock. God IS with you!!

I had the privilege of meeting Pastor Steve several years ago when he was ministering at the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill. What impressed me the most was his love for the Lord and His word; then I heard his story and understood that those who are "forgiven much, love much." Later my wife and I met Gail as well and enjoyed some wonderful fellowship together. Our sadness in his passing is because of our loss; he is rejoicing in the One who became his LIFE. Our prayers are with you, Gail, your family, and the church family. In His love, Lee & Kitty Bennett--Christian Embassy, Washington, DC

Dearest Pastor Steve Mays, a beloved brother in Christ. You have been my companion for years when I was a college student. On my way home I would listen to "Light of the Word" on KKLA , sometimes driving slow or staying in my car to finish the sermon. You were a strong man of faith, always presenting the true gospel. "Well done, good and faithful servant."
Dear Mays family, you are in my prayers. May the Holy Soirit comfort you during this time of sorrow. Don't be discouraged, you shall see him again!

Dear Gail, family and friends, please accept my deepest heart felt sympathy in the loss of your beloved husband, father, grandfather and Pastor. May God embrace you all with His amazing love and peace as you look to Jesus during this very heart breaking and difficult time. My prayers are that you find comfort in the glorious promises of our Abba father, that we will be reunited with our loved ones one day... Come Jesus come !!! I did know or hear Pastor Steve teach, but from what I've read and heard he was a wonderful and faithful servant to our Lord...He is now looking into the face of Jesus, we can only imagine what that must be like..... I want to thank his lovely wife Gail, for writing a beautiful little book titled, "Principles of Leadership for Women," I'm new to women's ministry and it has taught and blessed me so much about the high calling and privilege of serving our God, what a powerful book.... I started South Bay Calvary Church in 2006, I thought I was leaning towards being Catholic until my Niece brought me here to Calvary. I had NO idea of all the singing and rejoicing there was, Outstanding! and Pastor Steve, what a remarkable man is was, Jesus picked a great man to serve us here at Calvary, and we must never forget the great stories he shared with us that just made us all laugh. What a beautiful man he was. Pastor Steve is now with our Holy Father, and I do believe his purpose here was complete, and we should all celebrate.
God Bless.
