Rochester/Corning: Stanley Donald Stookey, 99 passed away in Rochester on November 4, 2014. He enjoyed a rich, full life that included great professional success as a research scientist for Corning Glass Works and equally great success as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Hunting, fishing, boating, and world travel were among his many interests.

Dr. Stookey was born May 23, 1915 in Hay Springs, NE, the son of Stanley and Hermie Stookey. He was a graduate of Coe College and Lafayette College, and earned a Ph.D. from MIT in 1940. The same year he married his beloved wife Ruth (Watterson) and began a 47 year career with Corning Glass Works. While at Corning he was awarded 60 patents for glass and ceramic inventions, including Pyroceram (Corning Ware), photosensitive and photochromic glass. He received numerous professional awards, including the National Medal of Technology presented to him by President Ronald Reagan in 1986. In 2010 he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Dr. Stookey authored two books and many technical articles. He retired as Corning Glass Works' Director of Fundamental Chemical Research in 1987.

Dr. Stookey is survived by his two sons and their spouses: Dr. Robert A. (Sally) Stookey of Pittsford and Donald B. (Beth) Stookey of Utica; six grandchildren: David (Phyllis) Stookey, Steven (Rosslyn) Stookey, Benjamin (Jennifer) Zak, Darren Zak, Melissa (Shawn) Connelly and Jake (Mindy) Stookey; eight great-grandchildren: Jessica and Megan Stookey, Jack and Ava Stookey, Anna and Brooke Zak, and Maya and Sage Connelly. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth and his daughter Margaret A. Zak.

A private memorial service is planned, with interment at Chapel Knolls Cemetery in Coopers Plains, NY. Friends may consider donations in his memory to Coe College, Cedar Rapids, IA. To share a memory of Dr. Stookey or send a condolence to the family visit www.anthonychapels.com.

I have added two photos to the right, displaying my favorite pattern of Corningware. I also liked and use the forest green pattern of the 70's. My grandchildren still eat from them when they visit, and they are just as resilient as ever, 40+ years later. THANK YOU, Mr. Stookey.

One of my favorite patterns, so relaxing. (And, thank you Mr. Stookey! God Bless and rest in peace.
