Elden Peterson Obituary

Elden J. Peterson
1919 ~ 2014
Elden J. Peterson, our beloved and dearest Dad, Papa and Great-Papa, passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 22, 1919 to Andrew Lysander and Lettie Phipps Peterson in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. He is survived. by his three sons and two daughters, E. Eugene (Lucy), Kenyon (Linda), Marilyn (Jeffrey Perkins), Elizabeth (Russell Springer), and Eric (Julie), twenty-nine grandchildren and forty-five great grandchildren.
He served an LDS mission in California from 1940-1942, and honorably served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Alice Crowley in the Manti Temple in 1944, and they were married for seventy one years. Together, they served a mission in North Carolina.
He was a career Scouter for thirty-three years in California and Utah, and was Scout Executive for the Lake Bonneville Council and The Great Salt Lake Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He served as the Bishop of the Bountiful 19th Ward, was a temple ordinance worker, and Assistant to the President of the Salt Lake Temple. Besides loving to be around his family, he loved going to the temple, especially with his grandchildren. He was eager to assist in any manner, and was the first to volunteer for any assignment! His life was spent in service to others.
Papa lived an honorable and exemplary life--and truly manifested ideals of the Boy Scout Law. All who knew him, know what a kind, sweet, spiritual and humble man he was. He will be deeply missed!

Love you sweetest Papa. I miss playing the piano for you every night when you went to bed. I'll never forget how you encouraged me and clapped for me after every single song I played. I have still been playing "Over the Rainbow" every night for you and I always will.

Dear "Uncle Pete" was always so sweet and kind to all of us , his extended family. We thought the world of him and Aunt Alice. As sad as his passing is, we know that he and Aunt Alice are together again and probably having a grand old time ! What a joy they both have been. They are examples of true love and service! They will be greatly missed.

I adore Elden. Nana and Papa were my backyard neighbors. He was always patient, loving, kind, and never thought twice about letting us use his yard to play with our friends. He was a source of strength. His smile could warm any cold day, and his hugs and handshakes were tender and firm. He was a gentle giant---especially spiritually. I enjoyed his testimony, the lessons he taught both silently as well as vocally. I imagine the reunion in heaven was a great one. I can only imagine the words were spoken loudly when it was confirmed he had truly done what he was asked to do. I look forward to meeting him on the other side, and hope to report that I tried my best to be as great as he was. I will always look up to him, and am so grateful he was willing to allow me to be "adopted" into his precious list of people who called him papa. I have been blessed to know him. Thank you to his family for sharing him with us. May you feel the Savior's embrace as you celebrate his life, and mourn your loss.

A Poem for Papa:
How richly blessed I've been to have Papa as my own.
He is the most thoughtful and generous man I have ever known.
His life was a true testament of service and a deep love for others,
Each person he met he viewed as his sisters and his brothers,
Typing in his journal each night at the end,
Kneeling down to pray with Nana his best friend,
Keeping house, mowing the lawn, all the time with a smile,
Making sure not just to do his part, but going the extra mile.
Playing an organ duet with Nana singing by his side,
Healing a broken heart and listening while they cried,
His hands gave service to me and you,
He gave hugs and many blessing too.
Words will never be able to describe this gentle man,
He was reverent and obedient and followed God's plan.
Papa, I will miss you! Your love has meant so much to me.
You have showed me the way that people are supposed to be.
Kind and Caring
Sweet and Sharing
Friendly, Helpful, Cheerful, Smart
A listener, a friend, a great sweetheart.
Calm and Disciplined, Joyful, Polite, Sincere, and Strong
Spiritual, Grateful and Humble, Happy all day long.
Someday I'll tell my youngest child of a man larger than life,
A man that went to heaven and was united with his wife.
A man that lived so perfectly that it will be hard to believe it's true,
But it will be entirely so, because Papa- the story will be of you!
I love you Papa! Thank you for being you!!
I miss you already- love Jill Dawn ?
