Phillip Patten Obituary

Phillip Thane Patten
1969 ~ 2014
Phillip "Phil" Thane Patten, 44 of South Jordan, returned to his Heavenly Father Thursday, September 25th, 2014.
Phil was born in Orem, Utah, November 21, 1969, son of the late Ezra Billings "Bud" and Anna Lou Patten. Phil graduated from Mountain View High School and achieved rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Phil served an honorable mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the New Hampshire, Manchester Mission. Phil married and was sealed to his sweetheart of 22 years, Amanda June Patten, in the Manti Temple. Phil attended the University of Utah and has spent the course of his career in banking and finance. He began his career as a network administrator with Veterans of America Credit Union (VAMCU), which eventually progressed into American United Family of Credit Unions, where he ascended to President and CEO. Additionally, he served on the Board of Directors of Capital Community Bank (CCBank), as well as contributed to other businesses throughout the valley.
Phil was an extraordinary person, who gave freely of his time and means to many near and far. He served in various leadership positions within the Boy Scouts and church callings within the LDS Church. He truly cared about individuals and their needs. He and his wife were deeply involved in the Autism Council of Utah and worked to raise autism awareness, organize and promote the Walk Now for Autism Speaks within the state of Utah.
Phil had a great love and appreciation for music and the arts. He played the piano and loved to sing, especially in the church choir. He played the tuba, cornet, and french horn in high school. He was selected to perform with the all-state band. He also loved performing and making everyone laugh. He performed in various plays and musicals. He especially loved playing Bob Cratchit, in the Dickens Festival in Salt Lake City. His love for the performing arts has had a great influence on his children, family and friends.
Phil enjoyed golfing, skiing, boating, and 4 wheeling with his boys. He loved playing basketball and football. He was an avid fan of the Utah Jazz and Pittsburgh Steelers. Phil loved going to the movies and traveling to new and exciting places with his family. He had an adventurous, spontaneous, and loving nature. He genuinely cared about people and was always serving those around him. Phil was raised on a fruit farm where his Father and Grandfather taught him the value of hard work which he incorporated into every aspect of his life. This instilled a great work ethic in Phil. We love you bean!
Phil is survived by his wife Amanda June Patten (McMurray) and their four amazing sons Connor (15), Mason (13), Brendan (10), and Ethan (5), his Mother Anna Lou Patten, and siblings Judd (Ikuko), Shawn (Sue), Chad, Clint, Darren (DeAnn), Kestin (Keith), and Jennifer (Mike). Phil is preceded in death by his Father Ezra "Bud" Patten.

Mandy and family,

I'm at a loss on exactly what to say. Phil is an amazing man. He was excited to help Special Olympics Utah and especially our team (his son Mason's team) He asked for nothing in return. I remember watching a proud father watch his son participate with our athletes and excel. I will miss his quiet demeanor and gentle sense of humor.

As a longtime volunteer at the credit union my memories of Phil will always be of a man who sought out ways to serve the underserved and assure that they were recognized and valued. His generous spirit and willingness to devote time to any member needing attention was monumental. I will dearly miss him and hope his family will find solace in the many people whom he affected so positively.

Dear Amanda and boys. Our hearts ache for you at this very difficult time. If there were any way we could remove any of the hurt we would. Just know this that we stand ready to help in any way possible as you face the days ahead. We pray for you morning and night. We love you guys. We do know, by experience, that the sweet, healing balm and power of the Savior's love and atonement can do what we, as mortals cannot do. May Heavenly Father bless you and hold you in the hollow of His hand. Love, Richard and Cindy
