Dick Scobee Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 26, 2011.
Francis Richard "Dick" Scobee was born in Washington state in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1957 and, after serving in Vietnam, became an Air Force test pilot. Scobee was selected for NASA's astronaut program in 1978.

Having previously piloted the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1984, Scobee was made Commander for the STS-51-L mission. He would oversee a crew of six others, including civilian teacher Christa McAuliffe.

On January 28, 1986, people across America, including many schoolchildren, watched in horror as the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded just seconds after lift-off. Commander Scobee and his entire crew were killed.

Twenty-five years later we remember astronaut Dick Scobee and invite you to share memories and condolences in his Guest Book.

I work at the headquarters building , first women to work there as a barber stylist. Remembering Dick Scobee the many times that I cut his hair I remember him coming into the shop all excited about his new vehicle 280ZX. Sweet soul, good-hearted person.

God Bless Dick Scobee and the Challenger crew. I was 8 that morning and I am now a 41 year old teacher who has had a passion for space for many years. I will always remember January 28th as a day of huge excitement, hope and tremendous loss.

Thinking of my uncle on this day. Here's a photo of uncle Dick, with my dad (James) and grandma Scobee.

For God is not unrighteous so as to forget your work and the love you showed for his name by ministering and continuing to minister to the holy ones (Hebrews 6:10). Dick will never be forgotten for all the work done for the NASA community and especially those encouraged and inspired in this wonderful persons' care. May God continue to strengthen your family in these “times hard to deal with” (2Tim 3:1), especially without a beloved one such as Dick Scobee
