Dear loved ones of Clayton,
It has been nearly six months since this horrific tragedy. My prayer is for you to continue to endure in spite of the emotional pain that greets you each day. May you be comforted in knowing that our heavenly father knows how you feel and listens intently if you call on him and come and pray to him, he listens and will calm your heart. – Jeremiah 29:12

August 10, 2013
The world is full of men, but what of men noble and true?
Can you say that you have known such a man?
These men are far too few.
But let me tell you a a story,
About a team of men
Who left behind a legacy
That will not be forgotten.
Highly trained,
They passed every test,
Chosen to fight wild fires,
They were called the best.
One scorching June day in 2013,
When a wildfire raged
The Hotshots were called upon
To battle the fiery blaze.
Armed with tools and heavy gear,
They set out in their prime,
No job too hard for these men,
No hill too tall to climb.
Command was set, plans were made
To tackle the fire's wrath
But winds shifted unexpectedly
And they were trapped in the fire's path.
19 men were caught that day,
The fire drew quickly near
Though they knew they were truly trapped,
Not a one showed fear.
Dig your shelters, men came the command,
Each one knew what this meant
They dug with haste and with one final look
They took to their tents.
Then let us look away,
For we cannot bear
What came to each one next,
Each man endured in those fiery moments,
His final Hotshot test.
And when the aid finally found the men,
The blackened landscape bore
The testimony of death everywhere,
And the men who were no more.
Oh children, your father was so brave,
A man who did his best
In work excelled, he fought to save,
withstanding every test.
Dear widow, may you never shed
another tear at some unhappy strife
For you've suffered enough dread
The day your husband lost his life.
Young sweetheart, your hopes and dreams
Lay in ashes, from the fire's wrath
May you find hope and dream once more
Though sorrow has changed your path.
Sad mother, your beautiful son,
your joy and your pride
Whom you succored with patient love,
has bravely lived and bravely died.
Two prayers I pray for you, the first,
Though all hope now seem dim
May you have a hope in God,
And place your trust in Him.
Second, May something good,
Something beautiful and strong
Emerge from this tragic loss
From something that went so wrong.
Then like a Phoenix from the ashes
May these men and their noble deeds
Live, for love is stronger than death,
In the lives of those who who stop here to read.

Our hearts mourn and ache along with your hearts and at the same time we have peace and comfort through our savior Jesus Christ just as Clayton does. Clayton was a dear close friend who I could count on for volunteer help throughout the Prescott area. He was one of my go to workers that when available was always willing to lend a hard working hand. It could be moving a widow or cutting trees. Our family lost a wonderful loving friend. We are praying for you Kristi and asked that the God of all comfort and peace wrap His strong arms around you in this hard time.

Carl and Family, I don't know if you remember me or not but I was a kid and your neighbor in Clifton in the early 70's. I wanted to send you my deepest condolences. I retired from the Forest Service in wildland firefighting. I wanted to share that with you to say that I understand your sons attachment to wild-land fire, I hope that all his family members could see how noble and honorable this profession can be by his sharing his attachment to it with you. It is hard to explain to someone who has not done this task why it is an appealing vocation but I can assure you that as hard as the job can be it was a rewarding personal experience to those that loved doing it. As I have read the many memorials to him and the others I am struck with the type of people lost in this awful event and it is profound. I hope you can find some solace and peace very soon.

Karl, You and Clayton's sisters have my deepest sympathy. I feel such a loss, I can only imagine the depth of yours. Carl,Kristi,Carmen and I think Sheryl,I am so very sorry..I have been in prayer for the family ever since I heard about Clayton and the other young men.Having lost my son Cody at age 20,I know there isn't anything I can say that will ease your pain, just know I am thinking about you all,and grieving with you.The only thing that really helped me for long ,was going down on my knees when the pain became unbearable and crying out to God. My heart just breaks for you all,and for Clayton. My faith is what has carried me through, and I know what the Lord has done for me,he will do for you too! Although I now live in Ky,my heart is there with you! Pat

I lost my own son (45) to heart disease in May. I have some idea of how it feels. There is an empty, aching spot in your heart! However, like Clayton, my son was a believer. I have the peace of knowing he is with the Lord. In spite of the ache of losing him in this life, I know I will see him in the next life. I hope that knowledge will also give you some peace.

Comfort the Bereaved
When earthbound days are done, and loved ones go beyond, Sometimes our Lord's promis for eternal life is hidden in grief and loneliness and strife, but, a sympathetic nod, a note that says, "I care", a gesture or a hand to hold will lift clouds of despair. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Romans 12:15. We are weeping with your family as you try to cope with this tragedy. Love Joyce, Peoria Az

We are so sorry for your loss and are praying for the strength, comfort and peace that only God can give. When our daughter first started going to Heights High School group, Clayton always made sure she felt welcome. She was shy and would sit by herself and he would sit by her so she wouldn't feel alone until she found her niche in the group. When she was having extreme headaches and undergoing tests, Clayton would pray with her before youth group every week. He was an incredible servant of the Most High God. We just thought you would like to hear our story.

As the mother who lost her 28 year old son, I just wanted to reach out to Clayton's mother. I know about the pain and the emptiness... If there's any comfort in these words I heard from my church Pastor at my son's funeral here they are: Your son had a mission in life, in his short life he had already accomplished all that he had to do here. Keep his memory in your heart as the most precious gift you ever had.

dear Kristi and family, I'm so sorry to hear about Clayton. When my wife and I moved to Prescott in the early 90's I got a job working for the YMCA summer program being a camp counselor. Clayton was in my little group of rangers and for some reason he and I just bonded. I never forgot Clayton and because I worked as a sports official for the city I would bump into Clayton off and on through the years . He was and will always be a blessing. My great comfort and joy is to know that Clayton is in Jesus arms and will always be alive forever more. I know Jesus weeps with you in your pain just as He did for Lazarus all the while knowing He would raise him. The Lord's great love keep you in this time of great sorrow. Jay High
