Lotty Hakim Obituary

Lotty Gail (Mima) Hakim
May 9, 1924 - June 16, 2014
Resident of San Jose
Lotty Gail (Mima) Hakim died at age 90 on June 16, 2014 in San Jose, California surrounded by her three children. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am, Wednesday June 18, 2014 at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Lotty was loved by all who knew her. She was born on May 9, 1924 in Offenbach, Germany to Joseph and Bertha Hirschhorn, where she lived until 1938, when she immigrated to New York with her family. She was happily married to David Hakim for 60 years until he preceded her in death in 2008.
She was cherished and is remembered by her son Robert and his wife Dawn Hakim(Ratner) of Los Gatos, California, and daughters Daryll Taylor of Carlsbad, California and Joyce Vogler, of St. Augustine, Florida, her grandchildren, Amy Vogler, Michael Vogler, Annamarie Dunn. She cherished the time with her grandson Jake Hakim and great grandson Nicholas Vogler.
Lotty graduated and worked as a Dental Hygienist in New York. After David joined the United States State Department, they spent several decades in diplomatic service to the United States in Asia, Australia and South America. They retired to San Diego in 1975 and later moved to San Jose to be near their children. They adapted quickly to the San Jose area due to family and the wonderful people in the Villages Community.
Lotty loved to paint in her youth and enjoyed ballet and classical music. She played in several bridge and MahJong groups and attended the Villages Hadassah, Brandeis Women's Group and volunteered for the Villages Medical Association.
Lotty will be remembered by family and friends as sincere, genuine, loving, compassionate and gentle. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Lotty may be made to Hadassah.

Your Mom will be greatly missed by us. Working for her thru all these years was a unique experience. After cleaning her home, she never let us go without some food, fruit, drinks, bread, cookies, you name it. It was a truly honor serving her.
God bless all of you.

The neighbors in Sonata and del Lago Villages will miss seeing Lotty and her little pup, Sandy, on their morning walk each day and again each afternoon. They were quite a pair, stopping to chat with neighbors or wave to friends passing by. We'll also miss her delicious cookies which she handmade and delivered fresh to friends in our area !

Lotty called one day to tell me she had a problem with her thermostat. It kept buzzing and she had tried everything to get it to stop. I was not able to fix it so my husband tried. We changed the batteries, jiggled all the wires and components, but still the crazy thing buzzed on. Finally we contacted the manufacturer who was also stumped. "There are no buzzing parts in that unit," we were told. Yet the buzz continued.

Since Lotty's floor plan is the same as mine, I stood in front of my own thermostat trying to figure out what else we could do. Suddenly it dawned on me that our doorbell hangs right above the thermostat ! I dashed back up the street to Lotty's house and could hear the buzzing even before she opened the door.

"I think it's the doorbell," I said, and reached over to jiggle the button. Sure enough, the buzzing stopped...and...another plate of fresh cookies arrived at my door the very next day !!!

Lotty and I laughed over that little episode many times. She was happy for the peace and quiet and I was delighted with the cookies !

My heart goes out to Robert, Darryl, Joyce and their families. I know you'll miss "Mima" but I hope your special memories of her will bring a smile to your faces and comfort to your hearts. I will be missing her too.

Love, Claudia Nicolai
